Eliminating humm/buzz in system

Posted by: John on 08 December 2003

I recently moved and am stumped with a humm/buzzing sound in my system. It is most noticable when I mute my 52 but I need to put my ear within 3 inches to detect the sound. I never had this issue with my prior home. I have disconnected all sources and played around with cable dressing with basically no effect. Any ideas?

Thanks

Are the mains properly grounded?
I used to have a slight noise from a preamp when everything was plugged into the same cct. as amps.

Installing a dedicated outlet for preamp and source components stopped even the slightest noise.

Thanks Kuma, I just had an electrician install 4 dedicated lines with a common ground. Not sure what to do. I could have the electrician come back to check the ground but could it be something else on the panel that could be isolated by turning off? I'm looking for ways to isolate the issue if possible.

Hi John

Is the buzz from the equipment or the speakers?

JN

The buzz/humm is coming from my speakers even when the 52 is muted. Normally there is a very faint hiss and dead silence when the 52 is muted. The only thing I have connected to the 52 is my LP12 which I disconnected thinking it might be a setup issue but the noise remained. Tonight I am going to try switching off the other breakers one at a time to see if I can determine of it's coming from an appliance.

John,

This sounds fantastic but, it took me three different electricians to install properly grounded outlets quiet enough for audio application.
I didn't realise this but there are apparently different ways of grounding the outlets and the last electrician who came over knew what to do and elimiated whatever the noise in the cct.

btw, just a thought... is one of the input a cable line? meaning video is part of our stereo system?

If so, sometimes, Isolation transformer works to get rid of a hum via speakers.
