Blues Artists

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 06 March 2009

Hi

I've always liked blues music and the following is a list of some of the artists that I have enjoyed listening to:

BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal, Jonny Lang.

The problem that I have is that with limited income at the moment, I don't want to just buy CDs/LPs on the off chance that I like them. So, can forum members please give me any suggestions of other performers that they think that I would enjoy.

Many thanks,

Nigel

Don't forget Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. The 'Live in Tokyo' album is brilliant, contemporary blues playing, but played with feeling (just as you'd expect from Mr. 335 of course!). If you buy it from his website you'll get the Live DVD as well, many clips from which appear on YouTube. Have a look at the version of 'Cold Cold' on YouTube - Larry's solo is blow your mind stuff.

And whilst promoting LC, don't forget the 'No Substitutions' album with Steve Lukather. Their version of The Pump (from Beck's 'There&Back') will force you to get your guitar out!

Regards,
CB

Without boring you with the details, a friend recently donated some unwanted CDs to me. Most of which were blues and included:

ZZ Hill, Jimmy Wetherspoon, Otis Rush, T-bone Walker, Junior Wells, Luther Alison, Big Bad Smitty, Robert Covington, Roscoe Shelton, Willie, WC Clark amongst others.

I now feel well on the way to increasing my appreciation of this genre, and with a number of compilations still to listen too, have much more 'exploring' to do.

Anyway, thanks for all of the suggestions.

As mentioned, Howlin' Wolf is definitely someone to try out IMV - 2 of my favourite albums from him are "The London Sessions" and "Moanin' in the Moonlight".
