UniQute replacing Nait2 - some forward planning

Posted by: Sloop John B on 26 November 2010

A UniQute is set to replace a Nait 2 in the front room with a dvd player as the main source for TV and DVDs. I current use an Airport to have Itunes streaming - a combination I call "nearlyasQute"

Now I'd like to do a bit of forward planing and have the capability to steam from Itunes to the UniQute. Now I've done a few searches, had a good look around and am none the wiser and Unpnped out.

So (for the moment) I don't want to rip to FLAC, don't want high res downloads but I would like to have everything in place to stream ITunes to the UniQute - how is this best done?

Thanks

Eyeconnect is ok but a bit flakey - free and will transcode aiff to wav.

Vortexbox will stream flac to Qute or serve itunes via DAAP.

Hi John,

For streaming with it own software the qute isn't on his best jet, only when you use the remote function of Mac/iTunes.

I should say, keep your nait2 and use the analogue out of the airport express.

I had a qute, nice thing but now i have a 282/250-2/nDAC, then you know how i think about it.

Hi John,

I'm using EyeConnect 1.6.5 as I couldn't get the other versions to work properly. The files are ALAC on a Mac Mini. A little slow but works. I'm not sure that I will buy as the Mini is 20cm from the Qute and connected via Optical link and the Remote App is much nicer to use. A HiFace might be next.

Thanks for the responses but mea culpa I'm a PC man.

what do I need?

Twonky???????

FooBear??????????????

to stream Itunes over wireless network to UniQute.

Or am I asking the wrong question do I want something that allows UniQute to see the files I have on my PC?

Hi,

I believe you have a couple of options:

1 Use the digital output of the Airport express into a digital input on the Qute. You continue to use iTunes as the control point in this case.

2 If you want to use uPnP, then install a UpnP server on your PC which can transcode the Apple Lossless files to WAV on the fly, as the Qute does not understand Apple Lossless. In this case you will also need a control point (such as nStream) to control the Qute or use the limited functionality of the remote. Or a PC based control point such as Asset Control.

Asset uPnP server (www.dbpoweramp.com) is able to transcode on the fly, and available in a basic form for free, if you want to try it.

Working through similar issues myself while I am waiting for my Qute to arrive.

Best of Luck

For total ease, and to avoid the ever poopy upnp keep your express and just optical into your unitcute.

Basic Asset UPNP player works fine on my PC/Qute system, as did Allegro. Asset is free, Allegro a free time limited trial. I have now copied my iTunes library to a NAS which includes a media player. It has backed up my music and allows me to play from the NAS without switching on my PC if I wish.

I'm sure the optical connection route works fine but as a network/uPnP virgin I had no probelems with the UpNp route.

Allegro media server and Asset.

I thought Windows Media Player 11 could be UPNP enabled so you don't need any other software unlike us Mac users.

I will second the Asset recommendation. It works perfectly with a pc and is quicker than Eyeconnect on a Mac.

Thanks Bruce,

what NAS are you using?

I'm going to have to get my head around all this stuff.

John

Buffalo Linkstation Live.

It is a sweet way of storage and playing files without the PC switched on. I should say that the system is out of action at the moment so I have not actually tested this configuration but I might get it up and running again this weekend and confirm it works as I believe it should.

Thanks Bruce.

The Christmas tree was juts put up today and there is a nice Naim box to go under it, for the first time in a while I'll have something to pout together on Christmas day.

Splendid! Do I visualise the wrapped box with a cable snaking out the back to a socket so it can run-in in advance?

It is a good piece of kit in my experience.

Correct, just turn on "media sharing" and it's there out of the box.
However it will neither play nor stream FLAC directly, that the OP has that problem.

If you add a FLAC codec to WMP then it'll happily play it, but it still won't stream it. Or probably rip it (I've not tested ripping, the rest I have).

The latest version of WMP is quite good - personally I prefer it to at least iTunes, but that's a matter of taste. I use neither regularly.

Personally I'm using Asset uPnP because it's the most stable/ flexible I've found, including that on my NAS. Other than the fact that it works and is free, the main advantage is that you can filter on file type, so if you have mp3 and FLAC versions of your media then you can list only one or the other, for example.

OK then just to check I have this

THE IDIOTS GUIDE

connect Buffalo Linkstation NAS to router

move Itunes library to NAS (I presume the kids can move their libraries also?)

Turn on UniQute and it sees music files on NAS through wireless network

Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Need to tell iTunes where the library is located. On a Mac, open iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and change the location of iTunes, not sure about a PC. Have not done it this way myself as my iTunes folder is on an external HD but connected to Mac Mini.
