Just done something really awesome to my Lp12, smile but not eveyone would like it frown

It started this morning , I have had a Circus bearing for a while but had not got round to fitting the new springs as the old ones were fine.
Anyway I went to put them on today and I could get the *&%£ thing to bounce, after one hour!a lot of swearing and visions of throwing my Lp12 through the window I discovered that the bolts that hold the springs were bent , this must be the cause I thought so I planned to get some new ones tomorrow, but while I had my deck open I thought I'd try something out.
A friend of mine used to have a Roksan Xerxes which i quite liked which rested on sorbothane(spelling?)blobs .
I had some sorbothane Folcopods I dont use lying about , "why not use those instead of springs and see what happens?" I thought.
I quickly made a hole in each folcopod and inserted them in place of the springs.(It was actually more complicated than that but I save you the details)
I then put the thing back together and sat back , what would I get?
On the first record the sound thundered out of the speakers solid and dynamic. What a result , I quickly tried out more and more records, I actually prefered the sound to the sprung deck.
Basically you get a more solid faster and dynamic sound, you loose a bit of air and smoothness but not much else, and the best thing is you can always put the springs back on if you don't like it.
I'm going to try out some different sizes and types of rubber blobs to see if I can get a better results as I think the ones I have are to big and stiff to be optimum.

and I think I can explain what's happening.

I've got a stock LP12--Ittok, no cirkus.

I've also got an un-sprung Pioneer PL41. The Pioneer probably pre-dates the LP12 design by a couple of years and was built back in the day when Pioneer was really trying to put out a good product. The arm on this thing is a stock Pioneer arm, very solid, very smooth, very well built.

What surprised me about this 'deck was how good it sounded and how different from the LP12. Being an un-suspended deck, I've developed a theory about why it's bass is chunkier and funkier than the LP12. I think it's acoustic feedback. Certainly I can whap on the plinth and hear the sound through the speakers. I think this means that the acoustic feedback is reinforcing transients and the bass. No wonder the thing sounds so funky!

Perhaps this is what you're experiencing with your tweaked LP12? I dunno, but based on my experience it is my first guess. Kinda fun, innit?

...P3 "fed back" much more than my LP12. My dealer noted that his customers with smaller speakers or bass-shy amps would get along with it quite nicely.

There is some feedback when you knock the deck but not much.
The deck is now much more stable than before so speed stability is much better hence the more driving sound.
Actually the Sorbathane blobs are compliant and do provide some isolation, but are stiffer than the springs.I uderstand that the weight of an item in relation to the "springiness" of the sorbathane is vital to getting the best sound.
I got futher improvments this morning by redusing the size of the sorbathane to make it more compliant and making sure they did not stop lateral movment.
This has opened the sound out further.
Another thing about the sound is that the background is darker with more accoustic space and the sound has more colour to it , making the sprung deck sound a bit grey.
The bass at the moment does not boogie like the sprung deck and high treble can be harsher also more dense music can get a bit congested.
Some albums are better some are not.
This has convinced me that with a little extra work maybe the suspention of the lp12 can be vastly improved , I'm definatly going to work more on it.

Just reduced the size of the sorbathane blobs even futher.Wow.Sound has opened well out treble is clear and crisp and the bass much tighter.
This is starting to really rock.
