CD Skipping - Copy Protection !!

Posted by: markjp on 04 December 2002

I recently posted a topic on my CD3.5 skipping. I thought my player was sick but now I think its the new Robbie Williams CD 'Escapology' The CD was purchased off the Internet from CD-WOW. The CD says it is 'Copy Controlled' My 3.5 skips when I play this CD and I have just realised its skips at the same point in time on each track, approx 9 seconds in. I have borrowed a friends copy of this CD bought in the High Street, this has no mention of copy protection and plays without fault.

Has anyone else experienced this with the Robbie Williams CD or other Copy Protected CD's.

By the way the CD plays fine on my Marantz CDR player and in the Car.

Is my CDP still at fault or do other peoples Naim CD players suffer also.

The Foo Fighters latest does the same on my CD5 - 9-10s into each track it skips / jumps. The version I have is copy-controlled.

Interestingly I can rip it to the PC and write a perfect copy wink

I'm about to return the CD to BMG for 'investigation'.

I´ve had the same problems with Foo Fighters and a lot of other copy protected CD´s on my CD5.

After e-mailing BMG in Sweden they sent me "protection-free" CD´s. As a bonus, they now use me and my CD5 for testing new copy protection technologies so now and then I get a bunch of new CD´s to try.

Fantastic!

I'll suggest the same to BMG UK wink

Do the CD's that skip on your CD5's play OK on any other CD players you might own. Is this problem something that only aflicts Naim CD players?

Does anyone with a Naim CD player other that 3.5 and 5 have similar problems?

What you describe sounds like how copy protection should work. Not making the original skip as on my 3.5.

Hi everyone,
My partner recently listened to a Rock & Pop CD, which was marked Copy-protected"
It skipped around second 9 on most tracks for a split second to sometimes nearly a full second.
I somehow had the feeling, it skipped worse on music with only repetitive drumbeats, and it did better on some tracks with mainly "melodical" music.
This same CD plays well on both my el-cheapo CDP and also the Discman (or the sound on both of those CDPs is so bad, that you simply don’t notice it ….??)
Since I don't normally listen to Rock, it doesn't bother me.

Can anyone from Naim give us their official position on these copy protection schemes and their CDPs? It seems to be an increasing problem.

Thanks,
Simon

We are aware that there are some discs out there marauding as CD's. These so called copy protected discs are in fact being manufactured outside the Philips Red book rules. These "CD's" have intentional faults every 10sec (approx) ALL of our CD players comply with Red Book. If you are experiencing trouble with any copy protected disc it would be a good idea to inform the companies responsible and tell them that "the copy protected disc that they are producing don't play on Red Book standard Naim CD players. They will replace the disc with same "unprotected". If enough of us complain, manufacturers and public, maybe they will stop this nonsense.

Some CD players will play these discs but may be tripped up by other copy protection methods whereas Naim (Philips mechs)may play them.
But of course, this means that you can still copy them!
It appears that there are various copy protection systems around and as yet no defined standard.

Our friends in the record industry are just trying one great big experiment to see how many people complain. If they can get away with it they will. Revenue you see.
