As far as I know a CDX cannot be used with the original CDPS. If you do use it, it may sound OK for a while, but the levels are wrong electrically, and so you can bugger the thing up.

As far as I know....

Frank.

Well
Just to clear this one up, you can use a CDPS with the CDX but you MUST use a modified CDS1 Burndy cable. The availability of the CDPS must mean that someone has upgraded the CDS1 to CDS2 head unit using their existing CDPS. We offer this as an upgrade to help CDS1 owners get to CDS2. We modify the Burndy cable by the removal of some connecting pins.

In order to answer a previous question, the CDX/CDPS combo is, "close but no cigar" to the XPS scenario.

We couldn't possibly leave a power supply of this stature redundant.

The CDS1/XPS combo does not work. this is because the CDS1 need another supply other than that which the XPS can deliver.

The reason that there maybe CDPS on the s/hand market is that some people may have had their CDS1's upgraded to CDS2's and then changed the CDPS to the XPS thus releasing the CDPS on to the s/hand market where its only use is either to be used with a CDX (modified burndy would under normal circumstances accompany the CDPS)or there may be a situation where a CDS2 is purchased new and used with CDPS.

Clear I think! roll eyes

Clear as mud.

Yet.

This is exactly what happened - CDPS turned up at my dealer (with modified lead) due to circumstances you describe above. At £600 I thought it worth a punt and I'm pleased with the result. This may only be because I have not listened to XPS and what you don't know you don't miss.

Trouble is, when I decide I must have XPS I suspect CDPS will have trade in value of bag of peanuts.

Final question (ignoring other sources):

What would you change first CDPS to XPS for CDX or 2HiCaps for Supercap for 82?

Alex,

how about CDX -> CDS-II?

cheers, Martin

P.S. the CDPS is a substantial upgrade to the CDX or lets someone get to the CDS-II on the cheap.

You paid £600 for yours, and get something worthwhile for it (IIRC that's what I paid for mine, too).

Why would it have no resale value?

The addition of the S/cap to the Nac 82 would improve the sound of all your inputs but if you've only a CD player then the XPS would be logical!
