The HMV sale and RSI

Posted by: P on 28 September 2001

I guess it's Okay to be able to inform you lot, if you didn't already know, that HMV.co.uk currently have one humungous Sale on right now.

4000 titles from £3.99 and averaging £4.99 and it's not the usual dross either.

A word of warning though. I popped in there yesterday with the intention of having just a quick surf yet two hours later I'd only managed to get through to the L section. Because it runs alphabetically through 4000 titles showing 10 on the screen at one time and you cant jump ahead through the listings - you can figure how many clicks are involved to get to the end - my wrist was aching for bloody hours!

By the time the first session was finished I had over 30 CDs in my basket but had to checkout before my server connection was cut. When I resumed this marathon one of the albums I had meant to get - John Lennons Rock and Roll album for £4.99 - had been removed - so it seems stocks are limited.

I finished up this morning with another 25 titles from L - Z.

Happy clicking!

Yeah Met - I was a tad concerned that publicly posting about the fact that I'd just bought 55 CDs in one go might appear to be a bit of a brag too.
However - I got hold of some stuff that I've been after for absolutely ages on CD at an average price of £4.99 a pop and I just felt it right to share the news. This is one of the best sales I've seen in ages - and all from the comfort of your comfy chair, at your own pace and with time to carefully reconsider if you get too carried away - which I always, always do!

The first box should arrive tomorrow all being well.

Can't wait!

Cheers

Pete.

HMV Sale… I raided the classical / jazz section as the rock and pop was totally full of people scrabbling about, and of initial inspection did not seem to have that many real bargains…

Steve Reich Drumming & Early Works - £5.99 each. I have always been a bit of a Reich fan, so these go most of the way to finishing my collection. Excellent minimalist stuff with the emphasis on subtle changes of timing and rhythmic shifts.

Phillip Glass Solo Piano - £5.99. Ok, lets clear out the minimalist section! I love Glass's earlier work, but thought he lost it later on. This is pretty probably beyond the end of the good stuff in my book, but I really like it the simplicity of arraignments keeps it from becoming over slick (which is what I dislike about his later stuff).

Oliver Messian / John Cage Landed a CD by each of these too. Can't remember what though. Not played them yet.

John Lee Hooker Boom Boom - £4.99. Wanted this for ages and always forgot to actually buy it. Great blues set from the master. Fabulous recording too.

Not much usable jazz in the sale, I already had pretty much all the stuff that was there of interest.

I had to take advantage of this opportunity. Just ordered Beth Orton "Central Reservation" and It Bites "Once Around the World" (that's a second copy on CD for me because it was ONLY £3.99 and such a great record - my first copy is looking a bit tired folowing too frequent application of Mr Andrews' products! But what an album! Had to buy it in case it is withdrawn from the catalogue. Sad I know, but my desert island would be a worse place to be without it.)

Sadly, I was going to get a copy of "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis which last week was available at £9.99, but now it's back to full price. Damn! Has anyone else got that album on CD? Does the CD still suffer from the mains hum that plagues my vinyl copy? Has anyone got a non-humming vinyl copy? One of life's mysteries...
