The Doors

I thought I would bring a music question to the "technical forum" because there seems to be more discussion here.

I just bought "The Complete Studio Recordings" box set by The Doors and it has just blown my mind with the quality of the music and recording.

Just wondered if anyone had heard this remastered boxset and if they had compared the tacks to a DCC LP version?

I have the recent Complete Studio Recordings CD box set, plus The Doors, Strange Days, and LA Woman on DCC vinyl. I think the CD box set is really good, but in my system the DCC vinyl comes out ahead. The CD remasters would certainly beat the common 70s and 80s Elektra vinyl pressings though - the DCC vinyl really is good.

My two sources P9 / MC25FL / Microgroove and CDX are coincidentally worth pretty much the same too, so I guess technically it’s a fair fight.

Tony.

It seems everyone would sooner discuss their collections of boxes on stands rather than the quality of the source. The biggest upgrade anyone can do to their system is find a high quality pressing, in both cd or vinyl.

I thought this topic would have brought a discussion of comparable pressings.

Its not always as easy as just buying the latest remastered version. I recently bought the Columbia 20-bit digital remaster of Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin and despite owning a number of similar Columbia remasters this one seems rather bad. There's a worrying absence of tape hiss implying a bit of notch filtering going on, plus a bit of upward tweaking elsewhere in the high frequencies, probably to compensate and give the impression of a squeeky clean recording. Unfortunately the result is rather edgy and sibilant.

Must try and dig-out an earlier regular release as I'm sure I would prefer something much closer to the original, warts and all.
