Internet Explorer 7 - Blurry Fonts on an LCD Monitor?
Posted by: J.N. on 02 November 2006
IE7 has 'clear type' embedded into it by default. This made fonts/text appear blurred on my LCD monitor.
Details of how to turn it off may be found here.
You might also need to press 'Alt' to get the menu bar back. Then right click and check it to keep it displayed.
Thank You Bill.
John.

Have you used Firefox? I'd be interested in hearing a comparison as I have used Firefox exclusively for a couple of years now and will not go back to IE unless it's very good.

Seconded. Much prefer to IE, and not as vulnerable to hijack.
Has the new version improved security?

Apparently not. Some vunerabilities repaired in earlier versions are now back. Hows that for resposible programming?

I have used Firefox for about 6 months and much prefer it. I can't explain why particularly it just fees better.

Why is IE7 almost three times the size of Firefox as a download? Is there more functionality in it - or is it just loosely coded bloat-ware?

Probably the same reason that Firefox is twice the size of Opera

Yeh Firefox is a very good browser but you have to download a lot of plug-ins and it doesn't work with every site on the web. Personally I use Avant 10.52. Ok it has the same vunerabilities as IE. But it uses the same engine as IE and loads pages quicker (in my system) than Firefox and I have found no problems re accessing any site.
Mind you if you want to download the prog make sure it is version 10.52 as the newer ones seem to have had more than their fair share of probs.
Also as I get sometimes advance knowledge of Microsoft's up and coming plans. There is word that IE7 will be part of the next Security update you automatically receive from Microsoft as it has finished it's Beta process.

Yes indeed - I was invited to download and install IE7 as part of recommended 'High Priority' MS Windoze updates.
It allegedly contains improved anti-phishing software. It's working fine, and I'm adapting to its new layout and features.

Just turned it off on mine and its better.
Makes me remember though, that I have always had a problem on my monitor where some letters look red or green.
Any ideas?

I assume you're talking about an LCD monitor. What brand of monitor and video card? Is it receiving an RGB input or DVI?

Opera well worth a try. I love it's keyboard short cuts for navigating through pages and bookmarks.
I use Mozilla in work though as if one has used IE all the keystrokes are the same.
Are we seeing the ultimate revenge of netscape?

Sorry, I've got no suggestions, then. That's not exactly a vintage video card. (If it was me,) I might try re-seating the video card and try another cable - just on the principle of checking all physical connections first. Then try the monitor with another system if possible.

Check out the ClearType PowerToy.
You may find you have ClearType turned on for non-IE displays. This can make some characters appear to have a coloured fringe.
cheers, Martin
