inverters

Has anyone ever tried using an inverter (you know-the type that you use to run mains powered equipment off a car battery) to run, for instance, a CD player, turntable or pre amp. If so, what were the results like? It's just that Maplin are selling a 150 watter for about £30 and i'm playing with the idea of trying it!
