The greatest year ever for music/ our memory.

Posted by: tonym on 17 July 2008

When browsing the internet for the release year of Santana's Abraxas, I happened on this website - Greatest year for music?

Very interesting, and as it was my era it makes a convincing argument. I wonder if anyone can do better?

My interest in the year of Abraxas' release was because J.N. kindly flogged me a spare MFSL copy of this album. When it was first released, a mate bought a copy and as used to happen with my friends in those days we gave it a right old hammering over a couple of weeks or so before moving on to the next "Best" album, and I never actually owned a copy, neither had I listened to it for the last thirty-eight years or so; yet, remarkably, I remember every note. Know just what's to come. Completely familiar. Isn't memory amazing?

And why is it that I can't even remember what day of the week it is, nor why I've just gone upstairs?

Great link Tony. And that list is very persuasive! And '70 did indeed produce some great albums which still get regular playing on my 555.

IMHO - the greatest years for music were 1966/7, 1976/7, 1996/7 and 2006/7 - it is a 10 year cycle - though I have it on good authority 2008 will be a really great year Big Grin

Abraxas is very good album, there's no disputing that.

ROTF,

Given that Talking Heads '77 was released in 1977 then you could be right.

1971 without the slightest hesitation. The list of albums of historical interest made that year is mind-boggling.

I was going to make a comment but then I thought

say something once, why say it again

ATB Rotf

77 also saw debuts by The Clash, Richard Hell and Television and whole host of great singles including the wonderful, marvellous, brilliant David Soul Desperate Bicycles Smile

1979 was also a bit of a blinder, or should I say an Unknown Pleasure.

Hmmmm 1970 being the greatest year? ...some great albums but I'd say 1967 was THE watershed year in terms of influential releases

...Sgt Pepper ..Piper at The Gates Of Dawn ...The Who Sell Out ....Jimi's "Axis" ...Velvet Underground + Nico ...Love's Forever Changes

...1970? nah!

Yeah, not bad, Jet. I have a few from then too and there are a couple from my Desert Island Discs in that list.

I tend to agree, but very few seemed to have bothered at that time as the best selling single in GB that year was with Engelbert Humberdinck!

1970 was a great year to.

I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a 'greatest' year but it sure was an excellent year.

Pick almost any year from the 70s and you realise how relatively poor we are today..or is it just an age thing?
Personal vote: 1972/3 DSOTM and all that.
