Return of the King

Posted by: Geoff C on 18 December 2003

Took my son James yesterday (17 Dec) to see ROTK, and we were both pleased that the journey has been completed in such an awesome manner!

If you enjoyed the Fellowship and The Two Towers, you should not be disappointed.

The BBC Radio adaptation is 13 hours long - either 26 half hours or 13 one hour episodes depending on when they broadcast it.

This is pretty much 1:1 dialogue+description with the book except for the removal of Tom Bombadil, as in the first of Jackson's films - so it looks like 12+ hours is about right for the lot assuming description=pictures roughly.

I saw the first two on DVD last week (can't be arsed to go to the cinema for a special effects film) and must admit that I enjoyed some bits and really hated others. The shortened Galadriel mirror stuff and mucked about Faramir bits really buggered up the plot for me, and missed some of the best dialogue. BUT - I was amazed that the pilars of the kings was EXACTLYas I had imagined it myself. And the interpretation of Elrond was, erm, interesting!

The book(s)will continue to last forever. The films are very pretty and good entertainment without being too stretching - as they should be really. In 5 years they will be forgotten by most as per the latest hype, the effects will look dated and different plastic figures will be available in your breakfast ceral. Jackson is not Kurosawa (sp?), IRVV has a point (hey, ain't seen you in church recently!) but they are only films - box office ephemera. To hate them is to expend to much energy on the subject.

My favourite bit of Tolkien is when the Maia (sp?) spirit of Saruman returns to Valinor with the Elves etc with a "what? where am I?oh, shit - screwed that one up, sorry" sort of episode. I think it's in the Silmarillion - or one of the more recent 20 volumes Chistopher Tolkien has dug up.

I think some of the individual stories in The Silmarillion / Unfinished Tales 1-25 might make good films. Each one is quite short and mostly only in outline - excellent for a film script. My vote would be Hurin and Turin. Turin aka Turamba aka Mormagil aka Blacksword - swords, destiny, dragons, incest, seige - got it all.

I rather liked Elrond, and to his credit he didn't actually say, "Live long and prosper."

I got used to it when I figured out what was going on re: that he was half-elven himself and his daughter was about to do what his mother did etc - actually "figured out" basically means had it layed on me with a big trowel via the "any farm boy in Idaho" unsubtle.. ..anyway..

Actually, as Aragorn is decended from Elrond's brother - does that make it incest? Ignoring for a moment the c 10,000 years inbetween.

Loved the film. It must have the most endings of any film I've ever seen.
