Does the Rega-PLANET CD match with a Naim amp
Posted by: Robbert on 03 April 2003
Maybe later i will buy a Naim amp. Witch i will use on my Dynaudio DIY speakers. At the moment i've got a rega set and de CD player PLANET sounds great. Will the PLANET sound better with a Naim amp? Because i will keep the CD player.
Or what kind of CD player do you recommend?

Hi Robbert,
For now, the Planet will do just fine. (even though I liked a 200,- Euro costing Teac 1820 better)
I've found more Naim users on the forum who are using the Rega Planet in their Naim system.
I guess about 90% of the forum members will recommend a Naim CD-player, when funds allow.
Sound-Gallery in Groningen is offering a secondhand Naim CD3 at this moment!
It's costing 1000,- (Heeft een heel goed Philips loopwerk trouwens!)
The CD3 will sound better than the Planet, but considering the newprice it oughtta be, since the CD3 was about two times the price of the Planet.
This is the Naim CD3:
Have you contacted Audiohuis Delft yet ?
Maybe they can lend you new Nait-5 to try at home.
Mind that Naim is quite fussy when it comes to ls-cable though! It works very good (most people say the best) with Naim's own Naca5 cable) Naim doesn't get along with Van den Hul.
well, whatever you deside, good luck!
greetings,
Alco

Wouldn't it be smarter for Robbert to hold out for a CDX? There will be quite a bunch appearing on the s/h market soon.
And maybe R. was rather looking for amp options...
Nice picture though.

Robbert,
In a word, yes. At this very moment I am listening to original Planet into NAIT 1 in my new all used gear mongrel office system.
The Planet usually fronts an Elex (predecessor to the Mira) in my spare room setup. When I first brought the NAIT home, a couple of weeks ago now, I simply dropped it into the Rega setup to test its functionality. Despite having two intermittant speaker sockets, the old Nait mostly stayed in that system until just yesterday when 'Office System One' was born (I listen intently to that setup every night to catch my jazz show).
Currently spinning Marley's 'Exodus' on Tuff Gong.... Ooh yeah,,, alright,,, we're jammin' ...
Craig
PS. I originally chose Naim CD3-5 over the Planet in a head to head comparison at home. Despite the Naim being over twice the price at the time I felt that the Planet was a worthwhile competitor when one put a decent interconnect betwixt it and NAIT 2 (Chord Chrysalis RCA to DIN in my case). The addition of an *.cap widens the gap but leads to the Naim playing favourites to some material at the expense of other types/genres IMO.
PPS. I am not currently up on what other makers have to offer.

Hi Robbert.
For what it's worth I have a nait3r amp. At the beginning I was using it with an arcam delta270 cdplayer, an old topmodel. It did not sound very good, being thin and a bit cold. Adding a flatcap brought a very big improvement for cdreplay, very worthwhile. However I have not heard a planet in my sistem so I have no idea how it sounds.
Your best option would be to try to borrow a nait from a dealer and try it for yourself at home. Make sure you also get some naim speakercables.
The price asked for the cd3 in Groningen seems a bit to high I think. They go cheaper here in Sweden.
good luck

Hmm, I don't think so Herm,
The step (price difference) from a Rega Planet to a Naim CDX is HUGE, even at s/h prices.
I went from a Marantz CD63KI, to Naim 3.5, to 3.5 + flatcap, and then finally a CDX.
Otherwise I could never afford it at once.
So, I'd recommend to listen to a Nait-5, or look out for a s/h Nait-3 or (even better) a nice pre-power combi like a 72/140 or 72/180 or something in that leaque.
so, one step at a time.
regards,
Alco

IMO the Rega Planet is a fine player with Naim amplification especially when budgets (as in my case) couldn't stretch to a Naim player at the time.
In the last month I have switched from the Planet to a CD3.5/flatcap and I am thoroughly enjoying a more fluid & detailed sound with plenty of additional clarity.
I did however have a very hard time when I demo'd the Planet to the guy who bought it s/h.
I found the Planet very lively with a lovely rich and full sound. No comparison on detail but I do still pine for some of the planets bass output which although looser was more 'in your face'. It was sad to let it go ...
Now on the hunt for a NAP180 to upgrade my Nait3 which I will fit with pre-outs soon.
Good hunting.

Robbert: Until recently I ran an original Rega Planet through a Nait 3 and Rega Ela MkI speakers, and enjoyed it immensely. It's a good match.

another drone "yes" answer. I have a Planet in my system and thoroughly enjoy it. I also use Chord Chrysalis as interconnect; well worth £50 or so. Keep it.

The picture below proves that the Planet works well with naim amps, as I have one, and I took a long time deciding.
Yes a CD5 and probably a CD3 or 3.5 will be better, but A CD5 is twice the price, and the others are quite old now and I dont know how many spares are left. You could save for a Naim CDP, but as could have I, but how long do you want to wait?
I have made an extra suport for mine which improves things a little, and again I would second a good interconnect, but for the price I belive it is the best CDP.

Alco - I think Herm's point is that the difference between the price of that used CD3 and the price of a used CDX is not that huge.
Well Dutch, the price of that s/h CD3 is 1000,- euro, and most CDX players are at least 2000,- euro. (most of 'em even more than 2000,-)
So,.... to me 1000,- Euro is quite a difference

But we don't know about Robbert, Alco. Maybe he can afford to take a bigger step up at one go. Upgrading in ministeps costs time and money, too.

Really? How dynamic was that system? Was it at all fatiguing or did it show up the Planet as a source? Curious as I'm seriously thinking of acquiring a NAIT 3, and if the deal goes through I might slot this either into my Reading system (pants Pioneer 609 CDR, NAD 533/Ortofon 530, Rega Kytes) or the main Exeter Rega Planar3/540, Planet, Ela mk1 system (which uses a Mira 2000 right now)... Enquiring minds want to know...

I love my original planet with a nait2 and now a 62/140 set up. It's great. I am watching foe a link dac as I know many people who went that route are very content.
My system is 62/140, Original planet, Rega P3 (parasound Phono) Benz MC20, Nordost interconnects and NACA5 biwire to Meadowlark Kestrel Hotrd speakers. It's a detailed fast system. Very clean sound and quite transparent and open.

Witch amp wil be "enough" for my speakers and livingroom? So howmany Naim "watt's" do i need for this configuration?
I have the dynaudio "Natural One" speakers. The planet CD player and the RADIO from Rega. My livingroom is for about 50 m² (5.2 x 8,5 )
