What Are Your Favourite Demo Discs

Posted by: DWootton on 15 November 2010

Hi
I was just wondering what are your favourite demo discs - CD or Vinyl

Mine are:
Peter Gabriel - US
Eric Clapton - Sessions For Robert J
Mozart Requiem
Cyndi Lauper - The Body Acoustic
Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Pendulum - In Silico

I'm interested as this will give me clues for music that is both good sounding and also good musically

Which recording of the Mozart Requiem would you recommend as reference Danny?

It is interesting to see that you have listed the Genesis album. I owned a copy on vinyl and bought a remastered CD some years ago. I remember being unimpressed. Perhaps I need a more recent remastering on CD?

One recording that has particularly impressed me is the XRCD2 version of 'Jazz At The Pawnshop'. I know it's old hat but it sounds great in this format.

I had to listen to some selections from my favourite bands : Floyd & Zeppelin but one that surprised me was my other half's choice.

Natalie Merchant - Live (circa 1999).

Fantastic live sound and a good album to boot including a great version of Space Oddity which is how we chose which Audiovectors to take home.

Cheers

Duke Ellington - "Blues In Orbit" is a good one. Played that to many people.

To test bass I used to use a Gary Peacock solo track from "In The Evenings Out There" by Paul Bley, ECM. More for my own set-up procedure though than for dem purposes. You can really understand what Naim speakers are about on something like this, and which speakers lose it.

1. Eldorardo - Electric Light Orchestra
2. Folk Roots, New Roots - Shirley Collins
3. The Wimple Winch Story - Wimple Winch
4. 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus - Spirit
5. Sinfonietta - Leos Janáček
6. This Earthly Spell - Karine Polwart

If it is vinyl then I have a test record with tracks on it like Don't Hang Up by 10CC and Peter Skellern Love Is the Sweetest Thing and I also use Secret Voyage by Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night.

I have used Half Man Half Biscuit records too, but I just keep singing along which defeats the point of the demo and scares others out of the shop - especially former England spin bowler: Fred Titmus.

A friend of mine used use Teach Yourself Icelandic Volume 2 - if you asked why he'd remark have you heard Volume 1.

This topic comes up from time to time, may people just take their favourite discs, others have a very methodical approach.

I follow the latter.
