Linn Kabers advice

Posted by: Willie B on 02 February 2003

I am looking to upgrade my loudspeakers (Mission 7753s), having recently gone from 72/140 to 82/Hicap/250. Helpful comments to a previous posting suggest that Linn Kabers may be in my price range and, more importantly, offer the kind of sound I want.

I have seen several pairs for sale but have been unable to find out much about them in terms of size and finish and whether there any manufacturer upgrades/improvements to be aware of. Sorry if I am going back over old ground but I would welcome any light that forum members can shed on this.

Willie do search on "Linn Kabers" or there is a thread "Kabers vs Kans" which might help/confuse.

I can't tell you exactly how large they are, but attached is a pic of a Kaber next to an Isobarik. So lots smaller than a Brik...

AFAIK the significant changes are to tweeters, a couple of generations during the speakers lifetime and then subsequent 'Neodymium' and Keltik midrange driver options.

At some point the 'stands' became 'Kustone' rather than steel frames, this is worth looking out for.

Look on the Pink Fish Media forum for a recent thread regarding active Kabers/Keilidhs, there should be a link to the Linn dealer manual for speakers that covers quite a lot of update/setup information.

Willie,

Most of the basic info on them is in the user manual which you can download from here.

As for variants, Linn changed aspects of the cabinet and drive unit specs on an almost monthly basis it seems. I have some fairly detailed info by serial number which I'll try and find/post later. Some of the changes are apparently quite significant, although I've never done actually comparisons between vintages.

I think I'd be right in saying that generally, go for later models which have the granite bases and ceramic dome tweeters.

Having said that, the Ninka's latest neodinium tweeters can be fitted to Kabers too, and it's now approved by Linn. Has anyone had a go at this one? It would be a pretty cheap upgrade for me if it's worth it. Any info much appreciated!

Later ones are also veneered on the front and look pretty fine, I think:

Willie,

250 and Kabers is an excellent match. However, do not simply dem them, dem them extensively, preferably at home. They can be very critical about what you have going on upstream, and you need to be _really_ sure you like their sound.
