Bach Organ works

Posted by: Reto D on 23 July 2003

Hi there,

Any recommendations? I'm looking for a complete recording. I realize that there are plenty of them but it seems rather difficult to find a good recording quality (what I've heard so far did not nearly impress me). Recording organ seems to be very tricky.

Thanks for your reports....

Reto,

Do you know the recordings played by John Butt (Harmonia Mundi) ?
I have just one CD of the Triosonatas and I don't know whether he recorded all organ works. This one recording however rather impresses me, with excellent recording quality - I'm not in a position to qualify the musical merits.

BTW, it was a "recommendation" of the Swissradio DRS2 "Diskothek im 2" programme, comparing various recordings of the Triosonatas; therefore, I guess it's interpretation and overall performance can't be too bad.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your replies. BUT..

Do you really listen to them?? This is the question.

Seems to be the one instrument causing the biggest difference between listening live and at home.

Reto,

Yes, I listen to both records (meaning vinyl as well as CD) and the “real thing”, as there are frequent organ concerts in the Grossmünster and other places in Zürich.
So I’m very much aware of how difficult (as not say: impossible !) it is to sonically “transfer” a whole organ & church into your living room. Even with the best equipment there is, you can only get an approximation (as with all attempts of Hi-fi, IMHO)
However, despite all the “audiophile” shortcomings – you still get the MUSIC at home, and that’s what counts…!

Then there rises the question: What IS the “original” organ sound anyway ? Depending where you sit in the church (or Cathedral), you get very different perception of the acoustics.
I keep changing my seats from the choir or nave (about 30 meters away, opposite the organ) to the balcony, which is only about 5 to 10 meters away from the pipes: Same church - same organ - But a very different sound. Which one do you want at home ?!? So here you go: Don’t just listen to one – select several CD’s form the same piece.

BTW: I frequently listen to organ music with my headphone – here the “in-head-localisation”, which some people dislike, actually presents you with this very involved sound perspective.
