SL2 Advice requested

Posted by: Goldstar on 03 March 2004

I am about to order SL2's, has anyone experience of these and any advice?
They will be driven with a 52/250 combination.

Robert,

Excellent choice, the SL2 is one of the finest speakers around.

Your 52/250 combo will be able to drive it quite nicely and the SL2's will reward you if you up-grade the amp in the future.

Enjoy your new speakers

Great speaker but do expect to have to run them in for a number of weeks - seems like 8 weeks will have them singing!
Also, if you're planning to set them up yourself, make sure the PIPS are the right way up - I think that's with the little "bumps" upwards - someone else may be able to confirm this.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

If you havn't heard them don't buy them.

I agree about the long burn in time. Mine still seem to be improving ever so slightly after 10 mos., or so. This is mostly in the bass, but the highs seem a little smoother, too.
I drive mine passively with a pair of 135's which seem to be a good match. I have mine sitting on concrete patio slabs.
It is a must to follow the assembly instructions carefully, and to make sure there is no rocking motion in the plinth. Also, be sure they are level and that the "tits" of the spacers are pointed upwards. Otherwise, sound quality will be compromised.
I am at present in the process of getting ready for a move to a new house and am trying my best not to have to sell my pair out of necessity to raise some need cash. So far, I haven't been able to bring myself to put them on the market.
Again, if you buy SL 2's, be very patient and allow adequate break-in time. You will be rewarded with a very musical experience.

Hello Audiogoose,

I see that you have equipment racks between the speakers, I thought that was a no -no?

I plan to have a Sony T.V. in the middle of the back wall on a low table. The speakers will be far enough apart so as not to effect each other.
I hope!

Do you think this will work?

Its a big no-no!

The equipment will interfere with the soundwaves and muddle the sound. If you have to have equipment between the speakers make sure the drive units are in front of the equipment.

Yes, I would like to arrange things differently. We will be moving soon into a new house and I will have more room for my system. I am already planning to have the electronics on a different wall from my speakers.
I just hope I don't have to sell the SL2's to finance the move.

Equipment behind the plane of the speakers front baffle will not have a bad effect, it's a problem if you put sharp edges in front of the speakers you get sound reflections arriving at you at different times which is bad.

What to do with the damn T.V. ?
The obvious solution would be to install one of those flat screen jobbies on the wall, but after paying for the SL2's I'm skint!

Ain't life wonderful.

Audiogoose, were you aware that using valve amplifiers in a Naim system is an imprisonable offence here?

I just mentioned using Sugden solid states in mine and had the post deleted!
Posted on: 29 March 2004 by audiogoose
Mea culpa. Actually, the valve amps are not connected to the system.
The 135's pictured on the rack below the turntable are driving the SL2's.
I must confess that I did try the little 8 wpc SET brutes on the SL2's with good results, so they must be relatively easy loads.
I will, however, practice self-flagellation for a week to punish myself for such an egregious offence.

Hi Ken,

My dealer is on holiday until 14th April and will deliver the SL2's then.
He kindly loaned me a pair of SBL's which are doing stirling service. After my Audio Physic steps they are quite a revelation!

Cheers Robert

p.s. can't wait for the big day! do let me know how your SL2's are sounding.
