What Hi*fi? and their reviews of JM Lab 816s and 806s

Posted by: Steve Toy on 01 August 2001

What a pile of drivel they have written this time.
"..the Cobalts struggle when it comes to the thumping transients of on Missy Elliot's set, where a lack of attack makes the music sound lifeless and dynamically flat-footed..."
What were they partnering them with I wonder?
MF, Krell?
"But it's not the refined treble that grabs your attention - its the superb integration between the drive units and the impressively even midrange."
Yes to the integration bit, that alone should warrant a minimum of four stars.
As for the "refined treble," I actually consider the treble to be their minor weakness, as it's just a little too insistent, and slightly metallic.
Only three stars!
I don't own JM Lab speakers , I don't own shares in the company, and I don't sell them.
But this review is bang out of order, and is at complete odds with how they really perform in both their positive and negative attributes.
Yes, this is only my opinion, but I know one or two folks who've heard them who will certainly agree with me.
No doubt, I'll continue to buy this "comic," but there are still a lot of people out there who audition equipment on the strength of its reviews, and I question its integrity.
Rant over.

Stallion,
I do agree with you, however I own every single issue since February 1999. This is my comic collection. You never know, it may be worth something to a collector one day!
Or maybe they'll come in handy on Guy Falkes Night! big grin
BTW, have you heard the JM Lab 816s at Chester?

What hi-fi is simply a 'jotter' of inane incoherent ramblings penned by pubescent schoolboys. Its contents represent little more intellectual merit than the grafitti scrolled on the average bog wall and is aimed at the dormant brain cells of the grammatically challenged.

Much like another place I know

Stallion,
Yes, the Mini Utopias are rather good on the end of your kit, I've heard them too - the same pair in fact, (vintage 1999) as Mr Coleman did lend them to Mr McEvoy for a while!
IMHO, you should get the CDS2 first, as your system must now be crying out for it! I think the outlay would be similar to getting the mini Utopias.
I don't know if Mr coleman has a CDS2 (probably does by now) but I know that Mr McEvoy does.
Also, you should hear the new QS Ref. table, as it has a *similar* effect as upgrading to the CDS2. I can only imagine at this stage, the effect of doing both!
