That warped disc mystery ....

Posted by: Haroon on 26 November 2003

Got out a 12" double white label pack the other day (first record I choose for listening) and both discs were warped the same way and I cant figure out how it happened? When I bought them they played fine and were not warped. The are stored uprightish (slight slant) on the floor, near to the front - but about 7/8 records infront of it. the records either side are fine, and they are not near any heat source. Confused

So why do discs warp? and what can I do about it? did a search for other posts about warped discs, which turned up unscuccesful experiences of putting it in the oven Eek - dont wanna go there. Also something about leaving it pressed for theee months - any luck with that peeps?

At the moment I have them wedged in my records.

114 people viewed this topic and not yet one person who's managed to flatten a warped record Frown

There must be a way ...

The old advice used to be to put the disc (in its inner sleeve) between two sheets of glass and put some heavy weights on top for a week.

Hefty books are ideal.

Do it in a warm room if possible.

Good luck.

Could it be that your hot water heating pipes run under the part of the floor where you had the records stacked?
That would cause localised heating which may be the cause......
Large weights on top a warped records for a period of time can make a difference, but will not flatten a warp 100%

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

2x 10 mm glass weighted on a nice sunny day does it 99% for me

Sure, but does it sounds as good as before?

Well, you have to take the glass off before you try and play it!

Hi Haroon,

I managed to flatten a badly warped record between to glass plates in an oven, not an usual one but the incubator for our cells in the lab ;-). The advantage is that you can adjust the temperature very acccurately. I finally succeeded with 60 °C for one hour (50 °C and 55 °C didn't work). It still does not sound excellent but before the record was not playable at all.
Good luck,
Thomas

I've had a couple of LPs do a spontaneous warp as well - for no reason...

I have one LP that was really badly warped (didn't notice it when I bought it!); it's wedged in between about 300 others and stays flat for about 1 side's worth of playing. You then turn it over and... D'oh!

The odd thing is that my copy of Hole's "Pretty on the inside" is really badly warped as well, but sounds fine! Mind you, that might be due to the grunge factor...

might give this oven thing a go - just need to get some glass.

I ve just remembered some other weird things going on in the house - the clock in my room had stopped twice in same week I found the warped record, clock is working fine now, battery just popped out of place a little strange as its about 8ft high on the wall Confused Also in another room is a very thick glass dish - this split in half whilst my folks were watching TV Eek this happened a few days before the clock.

Maybe its just the climate ... the mystery continues ... Eek

joking aside i have visited a well documented house and the glass splitting was one of the signs of poltergiest activity.

my mum and dad think its supernatural ... but take it as a sign that somethings left the house or entered hmmm.

yeh so what is a ley line??

So, if you have a TV, you know what to do with it - lug it outside and leave it there...

Being serious again now, I'd be totally freaked by that glass splitting thing. In my old house share in Reading, the house cat used to miaow at the walls for no reason, and lights would turn on by themselves (at the switch!). There was an old weathered stone in the wall at the end of the garden and we did wander if it was a headstone or something; once, my housemate nearly fell down the stairs in shock; she'd seen a reflection in the mirror (someone behind her) and when she turned round there was nothing there...

I think there is a perfectly natural explanation .. my bets on the climate or something like that affecting the light switch and glass and maybe a subconcious trick on the eye a shadow appearing as something else. Well thats the way I explain it away at least - makes it easier to sleep at night Wink

it could be a ghost with a "warped" sense of humour Smile

I saw a product from Clearaudio which is in fact a metal ring, it seems to be a good tool to deal with warp records but I was told this thing is expensive.....
