Kinks On Vinyl.

Posted by: custard on 11 August 2005

The Kinks are one of my favourite bands, but I have found that the odd bit of vinyl that I have purchased is of varying quality usually poor.

What are the best pressings to buy in mono or stereo lps only ?

I have "Kink" by Trentemoller, and I especially enjoy the Renyld remix.

I agree with you. I've had some of Kinks vinyl for years and some recordings were poor - on Authur I always thought Shangrila distorted. So I bought a remastered CD and guess what same distortion in the same place. I am not sure why the recordings don't sound as good as some other groups recorded around the same time.

The songs and the music are wonderful - so I guess it is something we have to put up with.

The Kinks 60's output was recorded very quickly, in dodgy studios, and very low-budget*; in actual fact, one of the reasons I bought a Naim stereo was to extract as much info and mojo from recordings like this.

*Pye Records? I ask you!

I love the Kinks too.

What a shame their 60s stuff is so poorly recorded. I've had a couple of their CDs for a few years now and often wondered whether buying the remastered CD compilations was worth it.

Perhaps not.

I think these are goodish recordings (great music of course) - I think they are currently available.

Lola Vs Powerman & The Moneygoround (Earmark - 42010) - Stereo (Bought this because I wore out my original and was very pleased)

Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 3-LP (Earmark - 42047) - Mono

Mono version of one of the greatest LPs ever made plus rare bonus tracks. Has extensive liner notes and an exhaustive annotated track listing! (This cost £28, but it does sound cleaner than the original and the bonus tracks are well worth having - not always the case with bonus tracks)

I managed to buy a new copy of Village Green triple album on the Earmark label for £21.00 on ebay.

The quality of this record sound and packaging is far better than the other Kinks records I own.

Really glad you liked it - at £21, I think you got yourself a bargain. It would definitely be in my 10 discs for the desert island.
