Long John Baldry.
Documentary about Long John Baldry, a pioneering British musician who never received his due. An English gentleman, a dandy and quietly yet confidently gay, Baldry's blues enthusiasm in the late 50s and 60s inspired The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. He discovered the young Rod Stewart and a chubby piano player named Reginald Dwight, who ended up changing his name to Elton John. In later years he moved to Canada, yet continued to tour and record right up to his death in 2005.

Guess not then Diccus! More of your thing in The Beat Room

LJB took over Cyril Davies' band, The AllStars follwing Cyril's demise, I think he re-named them The Hoochie Coochie Men. Cyril was the harmonica player, & 12 string guitar partner of Alexis Koerner, but they fell out. perhaps Cyril, a hard line Chicago blues man. took a dislike to Alexis' singing. LJB went on to form the Steampacket with R Stewart, and I think Brian Auger, and a girl singer, someone Marsden ? LJB had a privately funded condcert at the RHA not too long ago, don't think he was bald though, maybe a bit thin & whispy, he might even have been a ginger. It may be stretching it a bit to say he influenced the Beatles, although Jagger would have been snapping at his heels in the Ealing Club days, although I believe Cyril didn't much care for Jagger's singing either.

No, he wasn't bald at all, ever !

What a great programme, a bit too much of Mr Reg Dwight for my taste, but you can't have everything. Some nice old B&W footage, and I stand corrected was was involved with the Beatles, and the girl singer in Steampacket was none other than Ms Julie Driscoll, great stuff indeed.

Not long enough for me. It was fantastic. (Apart from Dwight of course). Did anyone catch the credits at the end was it Paul Jones doing voice over?

Yes indeed, Paul Jones on narration.

I thought is was interesting when R Stewart was talking about L J Baldry being a bit 'lavender' - could this have been the same R Stewart I remember seeing, in the audience at a Zoot Money gig in 1965 at Klooks Kleek, wearing a pink suit. Can't have been easy finding such a thing in 1965, not a lot of demand really.
