Cleaning Unterminated Speaker Cable
Posted by: markjp on 25 August 2002
Hi everyone
My speaker cable is attached to my speakers unterminated. How do I clean the connections or should I cut the cable and make a fresh connection. How frequently should I do this. I have had the cable and speakers 18 months and haven't cleaned the connections. I think this may be too long.
Advice please.

Do your speakers only allow bare wire connnection?
If so, you can still make a termination by soldering the ends of the cables on to narrow metal pins that the springloaded connection can grab on to.
If you can use termination, then I agree, bananas then spades

Thanks for Replies.
My speakers can accept banana plugs. For some reason when I purchased my speakers (Celestion A2's) and cable the dealer said it was best to leave unterminated. Is there any substance behind what I was told.

those that cannot solder.
Naim make very nice plugs, their bannana sits 90 degrees to the cable, ( allows close to wall placemnent with boundry style speakers )

Why on earth would a dealer say that?! Perhaps it was the end of the day and he didn't feel like making up cables in a hurry...
Banana plugs are the way to go. If the Naim ones fit (not all speakers have the terminals the same distance apart) and if the speaker terminals are nickel, then go with the Naim plugs. OTOH, if the terminals aren't the right distance apart, or they're gold plated (more common), then specify 4mm gold plugs.
When soldering, I like to tin the bare wire to ensure the solder meets the plastic cover. This helps stop oxidation in the cable itself. Then I crimp the banana plug over the tinned end, followed by a flow of a small amount of solder that just ensures a complete bond. And never twist the bare wires - it doesn't sound as good! (Yes, I know, bizarre...)

Frank.
