The Perfect Uniti

1. Remove current CD player/transport and replace with Uniti Serve.
2. Increase power to 80Wx2.
To me, makes a lot of sense. I would buy this configuration in a heartbeat. One box heaven!

Is this not a Linn majik DS-I?
Posted on: 17 September 2010 by Develyn
Does the Linn majik DS-I have a CD player/ripper/hard drive and a 80wx2 amp?
Posted on: 17 September 2010 by pcstockton
Dev,
Simply get a UniQute with a 250.2 for amplification.
Or use a UniServe with a Supernait.
Many options.

The Linn Majik DS-I has no ripping facilities...

True true
I don't get quite why Naim have got two streaming protocols (I know they tout one as a server and one as a player, but for joe average they are the same a la DS and Sonos)) but the HDX/serve software seems so good (even ex ripping facilities) and the ndx/qute/uniti player software seems so compramised, such a shame.

I didn't reflect on the "Perfect system", I am solely referring to the "perfect Uniti". ONE box. The current Uniti is great, but could be improved upon by my two suggestions.

Oh... i thought you were looking for realistic suggestions, not imaginary ones.

Throw in a digital out as well, just like the UniQute!

Is it a space issue? I thought you got rid of your UnitiServe....
Posted on: 18 September 2010 by Develyn
Not a space issue, just thinking of what I would call the perfect Onebox solution. I bought the Uniti because it was onebox. I added the Serve because I really like the ripping functionality but it got me away from the reason i purchased the Uniti in the first place so returned the Serve.

Develyn,
I own a Uniti and I like it very much with the current features. Naim is currently addressing the glitches of the initial firmware versions and this is the perfect approach.
Would I like the unit better if it had ripping capabilities in addition to CD player capabilities?
Probably, but I would go with a solution that writes to a NAS rather than internal hard drive. So that would be more like the UnitiServe SSD.
Would I want additional power for the amp? No. I chose my speakers accordingly. If I ever decide to change and I need to have more power, it is possible to add an amp and use uniti as a preamp.
What I think is still missing in the Uniti is a correct controller. I do not have an Iphone or Itouch and I do not wish to purchase one.
So in my view, it would make sense to also have a Naim application for the Uniti on Android.
But essentially, I think that Naim should offer their own Naim branded tablet controller for the Uniti line of machine.
Tablets are the remote control of tomorrow.
The classic remote is dead, time to move on.

Alamanka,
I hope no one thinks I was negatively commenting on the current Uniti. As stated in my post, I was reflecting on what my personal wish list would be of a "perfect" Uniti.
I too own a Uniti and I do love it. It would be better to me if it had a ripper/player rather than a player only. Storage via internal HDD would also be a nice option.

I'd be happy with a simple http interface to replicate the Uniti display on my laptop.

Good idea. It would be simple and convenient.

Adding to the list:
- easy firmware update done remotely (at home) via ethernet port

So you want this but you wont buy an iPad/Pad/Phone?
I think they will leave the hardware to the experts (Apple), but they already have developed controller Apps.
A Naim branded custom made tablet.... yeah that would be cheap.

Leaving aside Naim product strategy considerations, as a customer I prefer a tablet that is exclusively designed and dedicated to control the Hi-Fi system.
Among other reasons:
1) if an Ipad/Itouch or similar multi-purpose device is introduced in my place, the competition will become intense and I am afraid it won't be used for the intended purpose.
In plain English: the other kids will steal my toy.
2) I prefer to have Hi-Fi system distinct from computers or other work-related devices. This is also why I chose Uniti/UPnP/Nas system over a PC/Mac centric configuration.
3) I like the Naim IR remote control. If Naim decides to design a dedicated tablet (hardware/software) to control their system, I think they will again create a very compelling object.
Regarding the cost: yes nothing Naim makes is cheap. Maybe the cost of tablet components will decrease, as it usually happens when mass production increases. And I guess if Naim were to decide to create a tablet, they would make a unique tablet that would work with ALL the Naim components: from the 500s down to entry level products like Uniti.

Too true. Our iPad is in high demand. Remote, movies, games, web-surfing etc... That's a testament to the all-round brilliance of the concept, though.
With the iPad as remote, there is nothing perticularly "computery" aabout my mac-mini in operation as a music player. Almost never need to look at it via the remote desktop now.

Err, that'd be the n-Stream app w/ NDX - testing on NDX / NAC282 / CDX2 as I type. Best $200 remote I know of.

There is a VERY simple concept that will render stealing your toys fruitless. PASSWORD!!
An iPod Touch isn't very attractive when all you see is a number pad and a prompt to enter 4 numbers. Just like your ATM card.
Same goes for the other iDevices.
Dave is right. I bet you can pick up 1st gen iPod Touches of the smaller GB variety on the cheap. Best remote ever for not much more than a decent Harmony.

Excellent points; all of them.

Yes, maybe.
But in practice, psychological warfare would take place until complete surrender of the password.
Besides, such control point is supposed to be a common tool for everybody to share.
All the Touch, Phone or Pad are essentially personal devices. Using those is good for a personal or an office system.
But for a family room, a dedicated tool, for instance like the Sonos controller (especially 1st generation) is much more adapted.

Sorry... don't kids understand the word "No!" anymore?
A Naim branded "dedicated" control would be either worse quality than an Apple device; or grosely more expensive or (probably) both. Its the same as manufacturers who used to supply a Philips Pronto remote control.
Meridian / Sooloos realised this and gave up the idea of their own touchpad controller as a bad idea and just created a iOS app. lot of people consider the iPod superior to the Sonos touch controllers too. The only advantage of alternative controllers is they are less attractive to thieves (a.k.a. kids).
The iPod / iPad maybe used as a personal device, but thats about use not design...

...but back to the original premise of this topic - what if you could have the same tight integration as an all-in-one product with one remote (iPod touch running the n-Stream app) and MULTIPLE boxes?
That's what you have with the NDX and preamp + CD player of your choice (gonna try it with an olive CDX / NAC 102 setup at the office, later).
We'll be showing CDX2 / NDX / NAC 202 / NAP 200 along with HiCap / UnitiServe at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, and, aside from a few interactive CD player features (possible within the NaimUniti), I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference as regards seamless functionality.
As for the sound...!
