Interesting debate on the net about the sound quality of the latest Metallica album. Which reflects the state of the music industry in general!

HOLY COW!!!!!

I had the Guitar Hero-version at 10 o´clock.
VERY GOOD, no distortion.

Then the Retail-version:
My ears shattered!!!! So much louder, but lots of "crappier"....
Bloody distortion....
What a bad sound!!!!!!

My goodness...how friggin obvious is this.....I cant believe it....

Just proves what weve always known that CD production is about volume not SQ!

Staggering!

As a Metallica fan of some 24 years, I approached Death Magnetic with some trepidation, after the St. Anger debacle but I was sadly disappointed. The songs are much better but the sound quality grates. I'm not in the least surprised that the Guitar Hero version's better, given Metallica's increasingly cynical approach to the business. Maybe we should now be grateful for their less than prodigious output after all! I also wonder if Robert Trojillo has called Jason Newstead to ask how he felt about the bass mix in Justice For All.

At least we still have Megadeth! Long live Dave.

This is an interesting one. I have a SHM-CD copy pressed in Japan. While the sound levels are high, there is no distortion. Not sure about the UK/EU versions. To me, the blame lies with Rick Rubin. He does produce a lot a poor quality recordings. There is one paradox, he's Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is by far the best sounding.

I have ordered the 5 x lp vinyl set
Not got it yet

but I did see them at the O2 the other night
the live mix was rubbish
drums over miked and really in your face
the mid range was grey muddled and incoherrant
and the bass player?

well let's just say it was like ". . . and justice For all" all over again

Could not hear him
shame as he's a reasonable musician

Where were you standing / seated? I thought it sounded pretty good where I was - standing 5 deep from the stage.

Why? Sound quality or just didn't like the music? Quite enjoying my copy.

i know its a personal thing but i personally think its all been a bit downhill since the black album. sorry.

There are some good tracks on it, but the recording/mixing is abominable.

And it went downhill after Justice....another great record with a poor mix...imho.

Won a CD-R that some one left in a car. Listened to couple of tracks in the car, not my "cup of Joe", I'll give it a try on the main system if I can get it back from son.

Death Magnetic - Vinyl Vs CD Sound Quality

Unfortunately, they don't also evaluate the "Ring Tone" version.

Just wait to you hear the terrible sound of the new Motorhead album. What a sad state of affairs. Fourtunately I don't particularly like Motorhead.

SQ is really poor but the album is growing on me.
