My understanding is not that Apple are philosophically opposed to Blu-ray DRM/copy protection, but rather that the firmware required to be compliant with standards placed all sorts of restriction and burden on the the way the OS worked. They thought it too much of a compromise for an OS that was looking to be fast, reliable and flexible.

I think one of the main reasons for not including BluRay playback is down to commercial decisions - iTunes store sells HD (well 720p) material and Apple feel downloading HD is the future not disc media. There is also the element of paying the license fees which may be another reason. Apple were one of the original members of the BluRay consortium however so their lack of support for the format is surprising.

Even though I'm a fan of Apple's hardware and OS, sometimes their decisions do annoy me.
