Upgrading my Isobariks
Posted by: TomK on 19 December 2003
What should I buy if I could afford to upgrade my Isobariks? Sadly there’s not a chance of it happening in the foreseeable future but it would be nice to get some suggestions.

It's also an isobarik design, difficult to drive but I see you have 250 so no problem.
Well at least I think their great anyway

Some mana brik stands and soundbases under them, and then upgrade source/amps - no other upgrade is possible

I am inclined to agree with Jez.
Briks are an absolute Hifi bargin. You are to need to spend at least £5k to get anything comparable.
Best to spend the money at the front end of the system.

Hi Jez,
I notice you've been singing the praises of Mana brik stands with soundbases. Did you buy the two together or were the soundbases a later addition?
I've just bought some Mana brik stands myself and I'd be interested to know what the benefits were when you added the sounbases.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave, I've been singing Mana's praises because they have made such a difference and I have been guilty of passing sceptical comments about mana in the past (based on the slightest of evidence, an aversion to the mana fundamentalists, and 'logic'). I got the bases and the stands together because my floor is so crap. You only need the cut down ones if you are going multi-phase. With only one soundbase underneath the normal height stand is recommended by Mana.
ps. Was it you Dave that asked about my Vietnam trip? If so I'll send you my home made DVD of the trip if you are interested. Send me an email with your postal address to: w dot edginton at btinternet dot com

No, it wasn't me. Although my brother in law, who is a spice trader, goes out there every year and tells me that things are changing rapidly as the country becomes more tourism oriented.
Thanks for the info on the stands, though. I'm setting them up this evening in time for the visiting hordes.

It's not as difficult as I was led to believe to set them up properly, but maybe I was just lucky. Just a bit of patience and attention to detail more than pays off. You will know if you got it right if you notice a real improvement straight off. There doesn't seem to be a half way house - it either does the business or it doesn't and you have to start again.

That's good because I'm flying solo on this one. There were no instructions but it looks pretty straightforward.

Have a look on the mana forum for the instructions. Main things to bear in mind - The side of the glass with the dampening strips goes down. Start with the spikes as short as possible, consistent with depth of carpet etc and finger tight only at first, get everything as level as possible. Tap the glass over each spike with your knuckle (ouch) there should be a sort of 'tone' produced. The slightest rattle and it's not right. Tweak a tiny, tiny bit and keep trying. Be careful not to move the spikes again when tightening - hold them still with the allen key. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE NUTS - just enough to 'nip' them up.
Good luck.

oh I forgot, you need to pull off the Linn nylon feet and replace with the supplied mana ones, but you'll have guessed that I suppose

Oh bugger, there weren't any. Is this an absolute necessity?
Posted on: 23 December 2003 by Jez Quigley
Probably!
Maybe you could re-position the Linn ones and make do until you can get the new ones. Can you ring the guy where the stands came from?
