Puck centering

Posted by: Claus on 02 March 2004

Hi,

I was wondering how important is it to place the puck exactly in the center ?

If off-center, will it degrade sound or could it lead to puck actually dropping off when cd is spinning ?

Late at night, a while back, I put a disk in in hte dark and guess it wasn't centered because just after closing the drawer the puck spun off into the innerds of the machine, I was devestated. Be a bit careful and make sure it is on right. Next morning I had to unplug the CDP and turn it upside down and roll it around till the puck came out.

The puck has a rubber ring and magnet in it so it snaps onto the center post of the CD player to keep the CD firmly on the player. It won't play the CD without it.

Hi Wolf,

With my cd2 the puck isn’t magnetic (tried to stuck it to my metal cupboard but it just fell down). I think the nextel ring (or whatever it is called) is the magnet.

Knowing this I think because of the lightness of the puck it will center itself during the start of the spinning of the cd. As long as you hear the click when placing it, it will go is my experience.

I'd like to know why pucks are black. If I'm listening late at night it blends in with the case and I'm forever having to turn the lights up to find the little blighter. It's not much better during dull days. I think a range of coloured pucks could liven up the naim listening experience.

A great idea!!. I guess you could give your puck a spray job with some illuminous paint!.

With the latest players CDS3 CDX2 the puck is pretty much self centering, but on earlier players it isn't. However I think it would only spin off if tilted and not in correct conntact with the spindle.

Dropping the puck from 1cm above the spindle usually ensures it's reasonable centred.

I am guessing but probably the same reason as why the CD player inner tray has a special type of paint - to absorb stray rays from the laser. Colours apart from black are more reflective Smile
