Best TV under say £4k

go for the pioneer kouros lx range i blieve they are 1080p models and will display the all important 1080/24fps

theres even a 60" at £4800

The only plasmas to do this at present AFAICT are the new Pioneers.

And way back this year, I posted a warning from a Which? magazine that Panasonic screens running at 25fps were glitching visibly.

The latest Pioneer screens are 1080p and 24 fps and have (aclaimed *) black blacks. The top-of-the-range 50" jobbie retails at about £3,500 so if you budget £250 for a table or wall fixing plus £250 for calibration, that should cover your £4k budget.

Presumably you visited the Pioneer stand at Heathrow last month and saw the picture quality?

I had a look in Seven Oaks in Reading a couple of weeks ago and thought the new 42" Pioneer Kuro (768p) wasn't worth the extra dosh over the 42" Pioneer at 1080p. However, the 50" Pioneer Kuro at 768p looked significantly better than either of the above 42" sets - no doubt source-dependant or setup-critical.

* health warning. Might make your jaw hit the floor.

I was at the Pioneer and Sony rooms at the Manchester show on Sunday. Both very impressive and hard to say which was better , however the Sony's inability to handle live football matches let it down.

i would go for the pioneer 60"if it was my money.

ive just watched the england game in glorious hd and it was a glorious picture ( on a pioneer 50" 4th gen )

I was in John Lewis the other week and feel in love with an LCD in there must have been 50 inches where the entire bezel glowed. I am not kidding it was lovely. And can I remember the f**king name, can i f**k as like. And I can't find any info either, except it was 3k and I wanted one in my life.

FWIW I have just bought a 428xd which is a major improvement over the old 427xd. Contrast ratio is 16000:1 - stunning blacks, fantastic picture

Mine is only 720p.

The full 1080p panels are due soon, if not already. These are going to have contrast ratio 20000:1 - no idea on price

Yep that will be the PDP-LX508 at £3500. I have just been on the website. I already have a stand so thats £250 off although I want to put it over the mantlepiece inbetween the speakers.

I can't be sure about the cost fitting your parameters but your description seems to be in line with a Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 plasma. I read a review of this that may be of interest to you (review from late 2006): http://www.ultimateavmag.com/

i think the one mark means is called the pioneer elite 1080 over here it is /was £5000 to £6000. i think its been out about a year

Some might say I'm biased as they already know I have a Sharp 1080p panel... but having seen their new XL2E model at my local Naim dealership I'm both impressed & relieved.


Impressed - it's 24fps, 100hz, supports full HDMI control protocols, and looks very impressive - all the things that made me buy my XD1 are there along with a greater depth to the image and deeper blacks on all sources I saw (1080i & 576p from a sky HD box, freeview from its' internal tuner, and DVD from an n-vi via both Component & DVI)


Why am I relieved?


They don't make a 37 in this range now... and I sit to close too my screen to make a step up to a 42 viable.
I can cope with that... just


To be fair I can't give a comparison to the Pioneer 508 1080p as my local boys have the regular version (which still seems to me to give cloudy & noisy whites).... but if the LX really is £3500 I doubt I could justify spending more than £1300 over the price of the Sharp.

mind you... I HATE screens with reflective surfaces.... If I want a big black mirror I can get one of those for a couple of hundred quid...

I finally decided and went for the 428xd so thanks for your guidance and advice.

Just came back from a Pioneer evening at Audio Excellence in Bristol. I had a lengthy chat with the guys from Pioneer about their design philosophy and, apparently the engineers are looking ahead already at developing the 11th Gen screens. Being honest, if my house was a little bit bigger, I would have gone for the 60inch it was awesome.

11th Gen screens, I thought they had just released their 8th gen screens?

Caught me by suprise too.

Apparently their engineers are very enthusiastic/ forward thinking. Pioneer have been using the same technology/ components for years but what they have done is improve it.

Perhaps you are referring to the new Philips Aurea - there's one happily glowing away in the Canary Wharf branch as we speak, and yes - it's £2,999.

PB, if you've got the money to splash out on a new panel, I'd recommend you put some aside for a stand-alone scalar such as those made by the US company Lumagen. Tonym of this forum can give you more details as he has such a thing. Two good points to note though are that not only will it upscale any source precisely to the resolution of your screen, it is also software upgradeable, so will always be "current". If I could afford one I'd consider one myself.

to expand on jonr lumagen hdq @ £1500 and lumagen radience @ £3000

the radience being the latest and greatest and comes with dealer set up , but will nearly double your intended spend

It does not surprise me that Pioneer are already looking at their 11th gen - this seems fairly standard in the entertainment industry.

As an aside, I heard a rumour that Sony have the specs for the PS5 done already!!
