Neil Young-Greendale

Posted by: jcc on 20 August 2003

Just released in the US yesterday. Has anyone had a chance to listen? Apparently it's getting some good reviews. Pretty unique website.

Also now available for the first time ever on CD...American Stars 'N Bars, On The Beach, Hawks & Doves and re-ac-tor.

cheers,
jim

Greendale not available in NZ yet but I got "On the beach" the other day. Remarkable. I can probably do without the other two.

While I'm here, why does everyone seem to dismiss "Silver and gold" ? I think it's a lovely album with some unusual (for Mr Young) modulations and interesting harmonies. Nothing revolutionary but much better IMO than the critics give it credit for. Wadayareckon ?

I too am a fan of Silver and Gold and I also picked up the remaster of On the beach (I have Reactor and Hawks on vinyl)

I really enjoyed Beach as I had heard it was a "dark" album in the vein of Tonights the night and was not therefore expecting to. I bought it for the sake of completism (I have the full set now with the exception of the film soundtracks)

PS. Not managed to pick up Greendale yet

Greendale released here with a DVD of the entire acoustic Dublin show, saw him at Hammersmith earlier this year and the songs do benefit from the spoken introductions. There is a nice bootleg of the Greendale set with Crazy horse recorded in Atlanta in June of this year, currently circulating. Having only heard the acoustic set, I think the electric version (certainly the live one) is more interesting and he still narrates the story.

Pretty poor reviews in the UK of the official release.

Even if you're not a big Neil fan, get this one! Really good all the way through (good recording as well).

I saw him in Manchester this year and loved every track.

The one man acoustic set was superb. I'll be buying the cd, because it comes with the Dublin acoustic concert on DVD.

I think the album is his best for a long time. Very creative throughout with plenty of material for the connoiseur of well played music.

Not a weak track to be found.

I like the DVD that comes with the Ltd edition, which gives a different approach to the same tracks. Not the highest quality picture, but good.

As jcc pointed out, the analogue recording has been done very well.

Apparently there is an lp to follow.
