Old-Type Narcom - question
Posted by: uem on 07 August 2002
Hi everyone - Who can help me with this?
With my NAC 82 (older model) I got a remote control unit, which apparently is now discontinued.
It’s wider than the new plastic ones, and -this is the main difference – has two full sets of pre-amp selector buttons; one set on the right for the main-signal to power amp and another set on left for the recording selections.
I much prefer this old-fashioned model RC to the new fancy (however beautiful and flashy it may be !!) Flash RC, which I got with my CDS 2.
Where can I get another of these old beauties? Is it still sold officially or via a reliable second-hand market?
Thanks for any hints & tips
Urs

Urs,
where abouts are you? I have one that I'd be willing to swap for a new style one (not your Flash obviously) but I'm not 100% sure it will work with your 82...

John,
I'm in Switzerland - and of course, functioning with my 82 is rather important

Urs,
I've tried emailing you but it bounced. What's your correct address?

Hi there,
Whatever model I have, it works fine with the 82 and the CDS 2.
I just prefer the "straight-foreward" "all buttons right there" approach of these older RCs, rather than having to select sub-menus, jump pages, etc. as is needed with the new Flash-types.
(Just hoped, I could get a spare one somewhere)

Richard,
I think you're referring to these, but they are not Narcoms.

Omer,
Thank you for your clarification.
Now - WHERE can I get one of those ? (I may even make a deal with my Flash-type !)
Urs
Ooops - Am I misusing this forum for private trading purposes ?

I think that any old Phillips RC will work. I use my old Arcam Alpha RC with my CDi. Leaving my Broad suitable for 4 year olds RC in the box.
Geting a old style phillips remote shouldn't be two hard or expensive. Or do Naim have spares?

Sorry, I'm in the same position as you. I have this remote with an old 82 and I like it (campared to other naim remotes). But I have a Narcom with my CDX which is an abomination of design. So sorry no I wont swap you.
Why do Naim employ 3 year olds to design their remote layouts?

Heh heh - reminds me of Jezza CLarkson's discussion of the instrument layout on the Porsche 911.. "if I had put all of these dials and switches into my mouth and then sneezed all over the dashboard there would be more logic to it" or words to that effect, anyway.

What happens when you’re a 34-year old hifi nerd who spends too much time at his desk? I’ll tell you what happens. You drop your remote control.
OK, that can happen to all of us. But when the remote’s case is nearly pried open upon impact, you remember how you found the previous owner’s grime – collected since the days of the first six-digit serial numbers – mildly repulsive when you bought that second-hand 52, so you seize the opportunity and take the remote apart in order to clean it.
After you open the case, no fewer than 29 little push-keys, not unlike something manufactured by Playmobil, are scattered all over the floor. After gathering your senses (and the itsy-bitsy little keys) you lather up in the kitchen sink and apply a vast array of different brushes to all parts of the remote control. Eager to derive pleasure from reassembling your remote control, you blow dry the parts in order to speed up the drying process. (Pictured in the background is one of those tea thingies in which you ‘tumble-dry’ the push-keys as they bounce around in the hot air stream.)
Wondering where on earth the two green keys (Volume?) and the four grey keys go, and whether there was any significance in the colour coding, and whether any of this matters, you consult the forum in search of a photographic representation of said NARCOM remote control unit. After a basking in the brief glory of success, you discover and are immediately fazed by the fact that Martin Payne’s NARCOM has a much larger number of grey keys.
A moment of contemplation passes and suddenly a crazy idea begins to form in your mind … Your very own NARCOM colour coding scheme?
