I can play classical, or opera, and work away at other intellectual tasks without a problem. However I can't play any other type of music and work at the same time. Any idea why?

classical music is generally well organized, and it gets louder and softer, but mostly softer.
other forms of music are in your face.
i sometimes listen to classical music at work, but it doesn't "work" for me - i get drawn into the music.

So it has to start quite loud - to be able to get to the end before silence takes over?

Maybe Mike is thinking of Cage's 4'33'', which starts with silence and builds to total silence.
