Not a 32-5 vs 72 thing

Posted by: redeye on 04 September 2003

Just wondering if anyone out there knows what the differences are between the two pre-amps?

As far as I can ascertain, the 72 replaced the 32-5 in 1989. Both were top of the line machines for a while there and some (all?) of the 72 boards can be incorporated into a 32-5.

Anybody able to tell me more?

cheers

They are effectively the same. The 72 fetches a higher price because it is olive green and fairly new.

My 32.5 which was recently serviced by Naim is indistinquishable from a 72 once the correct boards are fitted.

32.5's are a bargin.

A great difference!

The sound of the 32-5 is "dirty" - the 72 is much cleaner and gives a greater pleasure.

The 102 is better ...

The 72 included the time aligned filters as standard, the 32.5 did not, but these can be added.

The other differences are primarily in layout etc.

When I changed from 32.5 to 72 there was a large difference to my ears especially on CD playback. With the 32.5 using 328 boards and latterly through the tuner input the sound was definately digital but changing to the 72 there was a marked improvement sounding a lot more analogue. With the same MC boards in each pre vinyl was a lot closer but a bit more musical on the 72 and slightly cleaner. The CD playback was the real eye opener for me. Overall I would say the 72 was more forward and more exciting.

Ain't it strange...

How some people perceive major differences between them and others none at all?
Figures Naim must've done something radical to the 72 to make it a step up from the earlier model..then again maybe just a board thing Confused
