Francesco Cafiso. Great teenage saxophonist
Posted by: warwick on 20 August 2006
Just reminiscing about my attendance at
at last November's London Jazz festival BBC Radio 3 gig.
I heard Francesco Cafiso on alto sax.
This teenager is fantastic! Well worthy of being in my record collection. Serously, even at the tender age of sixteen he sounds like one of the best saxophonists ever!

So far my favorite jazz disc is undoubtedly "Happy Time" by the Francesco Cafiso Quartet on CamJazz. Just superb alto playing and outstanding original compositions by Cafiso. His Italian rhythm section (led by the wonderful pianist Riccardo Arrighini) provides tremendous support for Cafiso's solos. Cafiso's tone has traces of Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Phil Woods, but his ideas are his own and quite striking. This is one hot group. Oh, did I mention that Cafiso is all of SIXTEEN years old? You would not have the slightest idea of his age by listening to this incredible playing. So far, my jazz disc of the year
