Copy Protected Discs

I've just bought 'The Darkness' new CD - 'Permission To Land' (which is excellent, if you like an AC/DC sort of a rocktastic thang).

It is copy protected and plays just fine on my refurbished CD3.

Should all copy protected discs 'glitch' on non-PIC equipped Naim players, or is it the luck of the draw?

I think it's a bit of a lottery.
I know someone with a CDX2 and a classical CD that just wouldn't play. But do you think we could tell if it was copy-protected? Nope!

Got the PIC upgrade and now it plays.

Sodding discs. It's a real pain. Just take it as they come.

I have actually had this work to my advantage. My brother has twice now received CD's from Amazon USA that won't play on his CDS2. Their policy is that if it's broke they replace it and you can keep the original, which mysteriously, in both cases, worked on my CDS2. Go figure.

I usually buy my CD's from CDWOW, but lately everything coming from them is copy protected. I have contacted them to know avail.

First I had to have the new PIC fitted to my CD5 to play the damn things.

NOw, off course I can't copy them onto my iPOD. Do record companies not realise by putting this stupid protection on CD's this actually reduces the chances of listening to the music. The knock on effect is that there is a greater chance of people not recommending a purchased CD to friends as they can't listen to the thing. I listen to more music travelling to and from work on the train than I have chances to listen to in the house. As a result, so far I have only briefly listened to new cd's by Radiohead, Massive Attack, Jane's Addiction and others. I can't recommend any of these to friends as I haven't heard them all properly.

Get rid of the copy protection now.

Rant over Smile

Music should be 'original' and played 'live'. No more overpaid Karaoke singers.

Depending upon the record label you may be able to get non-copy protected versions of the CD's.

BMGin the UK went to great efforts when I had problems with the last Foo Fighters album, but EMI are a total bunch of <expletive deleted> Wink

As for the iPOD problem you may be able to work around this - most CD's use Cactus (now Macromedia) Data shield - this amongst other things adds an additional data session to the CD that you're PC sees. Using suitable software, in my case a session selector program with Roxio EZCD creator, you can simply select the audio session and rip it accordingly.

Interestingly CD's copied in this way play fine in the CD5, although I now have the PIC update because of EMI's total lack of customer relations in respect to the new Blur album.

I had this issue a few months ago with the latest Massive Attack and Placebo Cd's, both of which were copy protected.
As in the entry above I purchased mine from CD-WOW, and ended up getting a refund. I purchased the same cd's from play.com and they were not protected. I know from other threads that its pot luck, so I had my 3.5 upgraded.
Concerned about the CDX2 not playing some tho... thats my next upgrade... Roll Eyes

Interesting....my copy of Placebo from Play.com was protected and skipped on my CDS2
