Low budget turntable and cartridge

Posted by: Number 5 on 18 February 2003

I still have my old Mitsubishi LT-20 turntable from approximately 1980. It had linear tracking and was put back in the box when cd's came along and has remained in storage for about 10 years. It was partnered with a 80's Mitsubishi receiver which has long since died. I haven't been able to test it as I need phono boards for my 102 and am wondering if anyone has had much experience with older Japanese TT's lately. How would the quality compare to the P3. I also believe the cartridge needs to be replaced and any recomendations in this area would be appreciated.

Is resurecting it a waste of time and should I invest in a newer table when the funds are available?

Thanks

Since you have the table, the only real investment is your time. If it's functioning, then a cartridge could be had inexpensively enough, particulary if you choose a model you could later use on the aforementioned P3.

Heck, be adventurous! Give it a try. You stand to loose nothing and as a stop-gap, some vinyl is better than none.

Just ensure that it does function properly and you set it up well, lest you damage your records.

Had a chance to enjoy an evening of music at a good friends house and took along the old TT to test if it was still in working order and compare the old girl to a "higher end" Roksan with a Dynavector 10X through Exposure ....well much to my surprise and my friends dismay the old girl sounded remarkably good infact I was quite surprised and pleased. There was some concern that the Roksan may not be properly setup as it should have blown away the Mitsubishi. I may have just saved myself a pile of money!!
