72 & other preamps

As a relatively newish member of the forum, I have a question relating back to the 'golden' days of olive/black naim gear.
Where is a 72 in the general pecking order of olde worlde pre-amps before naim ruined the external designs? If it ain't broke.....

Hi dave & Mark,
Sorry to hijack this thread. How about the new 112? where does she fall in the pre-amp hierarchy
Regards

Mark, thanks for the help.
However, having looked at various other threads it appears there is a bit of an issue regarding 72/102 relative merits.
Maserluv, have deployed anti-hijacking unit to sort you out.
In my opinion the improvements offered by a 112/150 combo are really not worth the extra cash and until you can afford a serious source/amp upgrade I wouldn't bother changing the Nait.
The Nait 5 really is an excellent machine for the money.

Yeah, the 72 fell below the 52, 82, and 102 - but the 72, like the 32.5, 32, 22, and 12 were once top of the line.
The 42, 62, 82, 102, and 112 have never been top of the line. One contributor suggested that the TOL preamps were special in ways that the others were not. Given the tenacity with people cling to 32.5s and 72s, that writer may have hit on something.
Regards.

My old dealer, who I trust a great deal, had a 72/140 set up against the 112/150. In the comparitively short audition I had (yes I know my conclusions are suspect and I might feel differently if I lived with the two setups for an extended period) I felt the 112 combo was better by a significant margin. My dealer said that the 112 had "killed" sales of used 72's and was also killing the sales of new 102's. I have no reason to doubt him, he is one of the top dealers in the U.S.
BTW, I still use a 72/hicap which I've owned for about 12 years and really like it. I also really appreciate the half width cases and have felt they convey a funky visual vibe that the slim line, full width and new "classic" series somehow misses...

I won’t replace my 72 by anything but a 52. Since it’s coupled with a Scap, “Blue Rondo a la Turk” sounds phantastic!

Wouldn’t you a newcomer, surely you could have have some chats with Paul Desmond (then one of the moderators of Naim Audio).
