Arcade Fire - don't geddit!
Posted by: j8hn on 10 November 2005
Bought Funeral at the beginning of the year after reading good reviews, now it's album of the year. I've not played it much but keep doing so after I read yet another article about how good they are. But it leaves me cold and does nothing at all. Whereas Sufjin Stevens - Illinois is masterful, ditto Laura Veirs - Year of Meteors both not a million miles away from AF.
So what'sup with me?

Maybe a bad case of 'you just don't like it'?
Sufjan Stevens and Laura Veirs leave me absolutely cold, so maybe I should try Arcade Fire. (although, I did like Merz - Loveheart very much, thanks for the tip)

Devendra Bernart also leaves me cold but Erin Mckeown and Roisin Murphy hit the hot spot.

Snap.
I can't even bear to listen to it all the way through.
Likewise Bright Eyes' "I'm wide awake it's morning"

Me neither - whiny, misery rock

Ah, c'mon...
Not a lyrical masterpiece, for sure. But, lots of instruments, vocals and energy thrown together that produce some catchy tunes.
Try listening again, but ignore the whiny lyrics. Then you might appreciate the genius.
Reminds me of a record I picked up 20 years ago in University - The Savage Republic. Arty, a bit whiny, but bombastic and experimental. Love it.
