Burt Bacharach - At This Time

Posted by: Simon Matthews on 24 October 2005

Three listens in and I am enjoying this new studio album so much.

The classic melodic quality to his compositions, arrangements and orchestrations is still there in spades. The production is delicious and all the playing is great. Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright and Dr Dre all help to add a contemporaryy feel but it is the timeless quality of this mans way around a melody which stays in the mind.

Get through the slightly sugary presentation in parts and you will find a great album - highly recommended and for a Bacharach fan a total no brainer purchase.

Never been keen but I thoroughly enjoyed his performance on Jools last week (with Rufus Wainwright). I look forward to hearing the album.

I'll check it out, no samples on Amazon yet.

I used to enjoy his TV performances back in the Dionne Warwick days, the white suit & silly smirk, playing sweet bugger all on the piano with a great flourish.

I ordered it today!

You should also listen to "Ron Isley meets Bacharach" - it is definately on my Desert Island list. Isley's voice and interpretation of Bacharach's/David's music/lyrics is very special - listen to "Raindrops falling on my head" - its a completely new song in the hands of Isley.

I am pretty sure that there is a vinyl version due although I'm not sure if it has been released as yet.

The ultimate Bacharach CD IMHO is "Isley meets Bacharach". This is one of my Dessert Island discs.
