How to connect NDAC to HTPC?

Posted by: Mike. G on 25 November 2010

Hi,

I've recently auditioned the Naim Dac with a Black Rhodia Rondo Digital Cable in my Hifi system. Overall I like it, highs were more detailed and bottom end has more definition and more extended, except I did think that the midrange, voices particularly were sucked in a bit.

My dealer said that this is down to the digital Interconnect and that if I used a better cable, I would get better results.

I plan on getting the NDAC, but, I'm not sure what to do interconnect wise, as I eventually want to build a purpose made PC just for Audio only. I was thinking of using an Asus STX Soundcard and using a Digital cable to connect to the DAC.

Interconnect wise I was thinking of Cleareraudio Silverline Optimum and use this between CD player and then computer at a later stage.

I'm no money bags so I only want to make a decent purchase once. I'm not sure on what is the best long term method to connect my CD player / computer to the NDAC.

Naim say I should use somthing like an M Aduio USB Soundcard and connect Optically, but If I get a decent sound card, will this help to ensure that if I connect using coax, that less electronic noisy interferance is sent to the NDAC?

Or I'm I better off long term, buying a decent optical interconnect and using this?

System is:

MF A3 CD Player
MF A1 FBP - Preamp
MF 550k Monoblocks
Interconnects - Nordost Red Dawn
Speaker cable 4x256strand speaker cable to each speaker
Audiovector Mi1 Sig's on Partington Dreadnaught Broadsides.

Black Rhodia Rondo.

Haha. That sounds porny.

Is it a porn cable?

Your dealer is talking crap. But equally your cable has a porn name so I am on the fence.

Correction should have read Black Rhodium Rondo.

Hi Mike,

I've built my PC out of second hand bits left over from other PC's and bought an ESI Julia soundcard to go in it. This card and the M audio cards seem to be the most recommended at affordable prices.

I am still using a cheap, albeit well made, optical cable as I prefer it to the coax connection.

I would suggest there are bigger differences to be gained by optimising the PC than spending loads of money on a fancy cable although I have no direct experience of the cable you mention. Use some of the money you save to buy passive coolers to make your PC silent.

I am running windows 7 but in a very stripped down form and then using CMP2 player which can be configured to work with Foobar if preferred. This plays back from RAM rather than off disk directly.

I loosely followed the instructions to build your own audio PC from this website (as you will see it is based on a windows XP system).

http://www.cicsmemoryplayer.co....php?n=Main.HomePage http://www.cicsmemoryplayer.co....php?n=Main.HomePage

Some of the differences gained by reducing the software overhead and underclocking the PC are bigger than differences I've previously heard when messing about with cables of any description.

Take one Mac Mini + optichord cable into NDac with ITunes / Apple Remote2 on an iPad.

To improve try Halide Bridge USB convertor.

Sit back an enjoy.

Hi Tog,

And no doubt it sounds better than most CDP's on the market, but if you want to go that extra mile I bet you could still make it sound better. Just turn off all the unnecessary software and services that are running in the background to start....

Thanks for the replies.

Yesterday I just ordered myself a Naim DAC! Smile

Was sort of spur of the moment thing! But I've been wanting one for ages.

I also bought a black rhodium Opera, silver, digital interconnect, based on my dealers recommendation.

For the near future, I'll just be using the digital output on my old CD player. But I'm still not sure on how to get my music on to HDD's.

I think the most cost effective option is to build a PC. I've price one in the region of abut £700 - 800. But this is a decent spec, and includes a nice case, power supply etc.

As for connecting it the the DAC, I'll first try the coax cable to a sound card, but may experiment with either using a Halide Design Bridge (USB to SDIF cable, with filter) or an external USB / SDIF converter box.

I'll then use a Ipad, to remotely control the PC, an use it as a glorified remote control, as I dont want to introduce a montor keyboard etc

I am with Mike k Burke with the ESI Juli@ soundcard. I think a few other members use them too with great success. I personally find a internal soundcard better than an external usb/firewire unit. Also I recently auditioned my PC against a Unitiserve in a dealer environment and it outperformed the Unitiserve to everyones ears, inc the dealers.

Hi Mike,

An alternative may be to buy a case with a touchscreen so you then don't need the ipad. I know CMP2 (music player) is designed to work with touchscreens.

Although I use a screen everything is controlled by the mouse which can be some way away from the PC. Once setup you don't need a keyboard anyway.

If you have a PC in the house already why don't you connect it to your DAC so you can play around. Most recent motherboards already have an optical output you can try. I did this with my main PC with a cheap 10m cable.

This allowed me to play around with ripping and playback software until I was happy that I knew what I was doing and what software I wanted to use.

I then proceeded to cannibalise the various PC's around the house for parts! (Luckily I don't throw much away when I upgrade my PC, just upgrade the kids computers)

If you go the ESI Julia route I bought mine from http://www.thomann.de/gb/ It was a lot cheaper than buying in the UK when i bought mine, can't vouch for it now mind, DYOR as they say!

As Occean says I'm sure you will end up with a PC sounding better than most available CDP's with a relatively low outlay.

The reason I bought my DAC in the first place was a USB stick outperformed a CDX2 when played through it(IMHO, of course). I now have a CD3 gathering dust, but at least it keeps my preamp seperated from my power amp.

My PC now sounds far better than that USB stick (which still has the same files on it so I can check I am not deluding myself!)

Have fun!

@ occean: Could you tell us about your PC configuration that outperformed the UnitiServe? It would be interesting to know more about it.

My original post is here, as well as my potential spec if I were to rebuild.

Current spec is dual core 3.0ghz, esi juli@, win 7 64bit, 4gig ram, ssd hd for os, silent setup. Nothing really ott. Dbpoweramp, wasapi foobar.
