J*** recommendations needed

Posted by: Rubio on 20 September 2010

I need some CD recommendations for artists like Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie. 2 to 4 CD sets with nice selections and the best remastering on the market (not too much filtering...) would be very desirable . I don't know these artists too well so I need some nice starting point with some of the hits included).

Consider Art Tatum, the man Dizzy Gillespie called "God". A couple of the "The Complete Tatum Group Masterpieces" CDs are still available at concordmusicgroup.com. Complete sets are selling at ridiculous prices on Amazon. Brilliant, exciting stuff. I didn't give the sound quality a passing thought, but Pablo does good work.

Really can't go wrong with anything by Duke Ellington. There are so many good recordings, however the top three that come to mind (for me), and barely scratch the surface . . . and not necessarily CD sets and/or with regards to remastering, though some have been remastered.
Duke Ellington Live at Newport, Such Sweet Thunder, Back to Back Ellington & Johnny Hodges. First two are some of the best big band dates, the third is small group blues recording.

Basie at Birdland, and Atomic Basie

Something Old, Something New Dizzy. My final recommendation is one of the all time great jazz concerts/recordings ever, Jazz at Massey Hall. Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Chan err Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, Max Roach! BeBop at it's best, and this one has a remastered copy available.

Good luck with the jazz journey.

Try 'Money Jungle'

You might also like to try "Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins" and "Side by Side" (the latter is another great recording with Johnny Hodges). "Masterpieces By Ellington" is another favourite of mine.

Rubio, there have been a couple of recent Jazz recommendation threads. So a search might be worthwhile.

Max which of the Massey Hall discs do you prefer the OJC or the newer version with the extra tracks? Bearing in mind that the OJC version has the overdubbed tracks.

The same with the Ellington is it the 1999 version or the earlier Columbia one which was supposedly re-recordings made in the studio after the actual show?

I have been meaning to buy them both for awhile now but never got around to it.

Ewemon-

Definitely the newer version w/extra tracks! It doesn't have the Mingus overdub, has the complete concert, AND a Max Roach solo to boot! (just ordered it myself to update the original)

Ellington is the '99 copy.
