BBC HD "radio"

Details of an extension of what I assume is the same system used during the proms earlier this year.

BBC news

Mods obviously move this if Padded Cell is not deemed a fit place.

Good news, but now the debate is how best to listen to it, the new Naim streamer I assume? Will it be better than FM?

DAB is dead. Hurrah!

I am not sure but the page that comes up implies this will only be available via BBC radio player accessed from their web site,...at least to start with. I wonder if they plan to offer HD via generic internet radio?

What would be very handy for this, and for things like the Berlin Phils digital concert hall and even Spotify is a bit of computer magic that diverts what is going to your soundcard and instead delivers it up via upnp so you can stream it.

UPnP Server Asset R3 (just released), does just that: "Windows 7 and Vista users can capture their PC sound output and stream to a UPnP player through the PC Sound Capture WASAPI item."

Thanks Aleg - exactly what I was looking for. It seems the BBC HD radio is part of a wider web radio project called UK Radioplayer which will have over 400 online radio stations, and is intended to work with set top boxes as well. I like the idea of streaming live music - hope it catches on.

Problem is that this service will not be available in the US Big Grin.

I, for one, am willing to pay. Just offer me the opportunity.

David - not sure whether you are into classical music, but if you are, have you seen any of the "HD" webcasts from the Metropolitan Opera? I've only just discovered them .. the Berlin Phil are doing something similar in Europe .. I wonder if this is the way certain kinds of music will go. Imagine being able to listen in live to the Village Vanguard, or wherever ..

This must be a good opportunity for the BBC to make money abroad, just charge a subscription fee to anyone who wants to listen to the service.

Shame there's no version for a linux-based NAS Frown

I was really disappointed to to be able to listen and appreciate the XHQ proms project this year.

At least HD Sound looks promising for the future. Here's an extract from Robert Brun's blog:

"HD Sound on the internet is not the end of the story. We received a lot of feedback about other platforms and I am committed to exploring ways to further improve the audio we deliver to our audience on all platforms."
