NAP 250 vs HX75
Posted by: welshmark on 29 November 2002
I read with interest the adventures of the 'TW Riders'- who be they ? Interesting playlist by the way.
I noted that the system in question included a Naim pre-amp with Dynavector HX75 power-amp driving Shahinian Obelisks.
I once ,albeit briefly, had the pleasure of hearing Sara 9's being driven by a Bedini power- amp fronted by a NAC 72 which worked very well.
I understand that the Bedini was a major influence in the design of the Dynavector amps.
However my question is :
How well do people think the current HX75 works with a Naim pre-amp ?
I own a 82/250 driving Shahinian Arcs and wonder if the Dynavector should be considered.

TW Riders They are four dedicated Forum members from the Tunbridge Wells area who ride out and visit other Forum member's homes. They play large amounts of varied and obscure music at high volume and eat your food and drink all your beer and wine. They then write humourous and informative essays on their visit.

welshmark,
Opinion is divided, so you'd have to do the demo yourself. I have a 52/HX1.2 (moving from 250), and Jason has had both 82&32.5/HX75 (moving from 250) - we certainly think the combination works well together. Send me an email if you want more details.

Ebirah and I did the comaparison with a 250 (that was badly in need of a service) Vs HX1.2 Both amps were excellent. In many ways the Dynavector was better, but as we later realised the 250 really needed a service. I think we may have limited the HX1.2 by using NACA5 with both amps. The one area where the 250 won was on leading edge/transients. I suspect the HX1.2 would have sounded better with Kimber or similar speaker cable between it and the ARCs. In the end I've still got my 250, and on hearing it Steve has had his serviced. (I would be happy with either a 250 or a HX1.2!)

Pretty well spot on, particularly the food and drink bit. Regrettably I'm usually driving so I have to lay off the bottle which is just as well because Tom and David (actually it's mainly Tom)wouldn't have anywhere near enough.
"No cellar too deep" is the Alves family motto, I understand.

After hearing his newly serviced 250 I had to have mine done. The upshot was that my 'tired' 250 was good enough to give the HX1.2 some run for the money and the difference wasn't enough for either of us to recommend the difference in price (2.5K!), although both of us preferred the Dynavector overall. We were using a CDS and 52/supercap.
I've not heard the HX75 but unless its as good as the 1.2, this sounds very much like a sideways step....ARCS rock with a 250! You'd probably be better off getting some obelisks or a 52 if you need to scratch an itch. Frankly, at 82/250/ARC level, I'd go and buy more CDs and forget the hi-fi.

The one thing I will add, is that the Dynavector needs to be well warmed up from new. A few weeks in there is a HUGE leap in performance.

That just shoving a Dynavector power amp into an otherwise Naim system is hardly the best way to demonstrate its talents, and that's without the possible earth problems.
To my mind, DHM being the exception that proves the rule, a far better dem would be a DV pre/power demmed against a Naim pre/power.
Alex
BTW welshmark, are you related to woolmark?

Dear Alex S
Were you really born in 1999 ? If so who's the pic of ?
Who is woolmark ? Or was the comment a variation on the old sheep shagging insult ?
Comparing L200/HX75 with 82/250 easier said than done - maybe one day

quote:I'm not sure what you mean by this Alex. Certainly I'd be surprised if the amps would work well with Naim speakers, and I'm not entirely convinced that A5 suits, but otherwise the match sounds good to me.

hmmm, looks like Naim have 'edited' Alex's reply???
Alex,
I was aware of some issues, but when I've raised this with Pear Audio, they've generally been of the opinion that this shouldn't be an issue with the HX1.2. Having said that I was never entirely happy having the HX1.2 being on the same spur as the rest of the Naim equipment using a Grahams Hydra, and things seemed to have improved since the installation of the extra spurs.
