Serge Gainsbourg

How sad is this - I heard Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot's Bonnie and Clyde at the weekend and I recognised it from the sample used by MC Solaar on le Nouveaux Western. Except I never knew it was a sample. Anyway, can anyone recommend and Serge Gainsbourg records. I'm going to Paris next month so I would like to stock up

I like the music of Gainsbourg very much, and I have almost everything available.
I dont know how to recommend his music, as he had so many different styles of music, that changed over the years. The very early stuff from the fifties and sixties, late sixties and seventies with Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot..., and then his later music with the Bob Marley Band.
There is a long box with 3 CDs that I also have, and I highly recommend it. The title of the box is De Serge Gainsbourg a Gainsbarre. The first CD contains the earlier music, the second late sixites and seventies, well and then the third one contains the later music. The CDs are remastered, and sound very nice.

Histoire de Melody Nelson, the everyday tale of Serge's seduction* of an underage lass from Sunderland (portrayed by Jane
Birkin, offstage), is a classic. Baroquely orchestral psych arrangements of wonderful tunes with dashes of fuzzed guitar. A masterpiece, but sadly very short at a tad under 30 minutes. Worth every penny though.

* if it was female and moved he'd have a go

P.S. Youtube have all of the tracks as shown on a TV special back in the day. Start here

Good lad. I find that attitude admirable. Never had the nerve to do it myself though

He wrote this little number for France Gall when she was under-age. She sings about how much she likes sucking lollipops to good old Serge. She claims she didn't know at the time what he really meant by those lyrics...

Yes that would be a good place to start. But his late carreer is pretty good, more rock. There's a live ablbum Gainsbourg Live (I think) recorded about 1987; that's a good bet too.
