Have I heard Mana?

Posted by: Steve Toy on 05 September 2001

The penny dropped this morning...
Three years ago when I lived in Northamptonshire, I happened upon Listen Inn's dem room, (they are a Naim dealer who also stock Linn suff).
There were some Keilids perched on these, er stands (?) which I thought rather odd given that they are supposed to be floorstanding speakers!
The rest of the Linn gear, if I recall, was sitting comfortably on some kind of gunmetal grey, screwless ironmongery - may have been Mana! cool
As for the sound, now we're talking Linn here wink
It was no hi-fi system in there...
It was a live band playing! smile cool

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink

Jean-Christophe,
Je ne m'en rappelle plus rien. C'etait il y a trop longtemps...
I suppose it was an LP12/Kairn/LK140s, but I am only guessing... It was *tellement* long ago that the Ikemi was but a twinkle in their eye! wink

sometimes these pennies, or 10 centimes wink just *drop* when they do. It wasn't the little Linn stands, I'm sure, as these muthas made the Keilids look like large standmounters cool

I take it you are having difficulties in selling it then.

I would like to make an offer, but JW wouldn't like it so I won't.

I know you want Kans, but they really are pretty affordable you know. Surely no need to sell off your Mana to finance a pair? wink

It was a while back...
Maybe it wasn't Mana then...

Thanks for that, anyway, Paul.

Drive north - you'll find them all waiting for you in Anglesey. Advise taking the violin case.

Alex.

Stallion,
Probably not a good idea to wind them up to much -it'd be a bit like trying to wind up the Taleban by waving a Bible in front of their noses! The violin case wouldn't last long against JW/Mana's nuke button wink
Your best bet would be to arrange an A/B dem of Mana versus QS Ref, as I'm doing next tuesday (provided I don't get *bumped off.* big grin)
Then, and only then will I really be in a position to say exactly what I want...
Who knows, I may yet be seriously impressed by the Mana. The most likely outcome, I reckon will be that the two presentations are different, but one is not *better* than the other, and it's a question of taste as to which you prefer.

Paul D,
You are rather restrained compared to some, know what I mean? wink Oink! Oink!
I wonder how Arye's translation software would cope with this? big grin

No, you spelt my name correctly, because you can read... unlike Mr. Darwin big grin
Me, I can't read or spell - Keilids, or was it Kylies, or Eyelids (shut)? big grin

Paul D,
Absolutely bleedin' brilliant! big grin big grin big grin big grin .
To be honest, the Goths across at Mana HQ are very charming - especially JW himself. They make you feel very welcome - until you upset 'em that is...
You have been warned, Stallion... eek

Mick, make me an offer if you're seriously interested - I'm in no rush to sell, it's just than I'm having my house in central Edinburgh gutted soon and I'd rather sell it now than later (and therefore avoid the cost of storing two racks, as I'm buying TF's 3-tier which I'm going to place on 11 soundstages.

JW wouldn't mind - I'm sure. However, I have no box for the rack as I threw it out when it got wet when a broken drain left pools of not-nice stuff in my wine cellar.

All the best, hope the M6 is doing well!

Despite his major *mistakes* with the 250, his floor, his cirkus and his tweeters.......they still let him shell out advice.

I think he should have a public health warning tatooed on his forehead.

One thing I cannot understand is why JW tolerates him on the forum. His rantings and abuse have probably caused more people either to hesistate from buying Mana or even not buying it at all than anything else I can think of.

He should be giving their sales department sleepness nights.

Still thats JW's problem, not ours.

Poor old Piggy has had a bit of a roasting over in the Mana forum lately. TF did a rather nice job actually. I think his popularity is waning and he knows it.

They asked him lots of awkward questions about why did he do this and why did he do that but he never answered them. He didn't have the brain to respond.

No I do not like him....he is a guttersnipe.

Re: Afghanistan.
I'm not sure that the Taleban are the same organisation that fought the Soviets in the eighties, they just seem to be the dominant group that has risen in the years since the Soviet withdrawal.
During the Cold War, we here in the West had every reason to fear Soviet expansionism southwards towards the Indian Ocean that would have taken Pakistan into the bargain, and possibly the Gulf States.
Since then, circumstances have changed considerably. There is a world of difference between Muslim freedom fighters, fighting for religious freedom under Marxist/Stalinist oppression, and the more recent brand of fanaticism, unrivalled by all except that of Mr. Pig himself. wink
During my time in neighbouring Uzbekistan, earlier this year - also a devoutly Muslim nation, I learnt the difference between the majority of Muslims who are capable of enjoying peaceful coexistence with those of other creeds, and the Taleban who are a major destabilising influence in the whole region, as incursions periodically take place into Tajikistan, and they have also carried out acts of terrorism in Tashkent. I even suggested that the Russians, Uzbeks, and possibly others should walk back into Afghanistan and kick the Taleban out...
One irony in Uzbekistan is that a weak, corrupt (but moderate) government clings to power because the Uzbeks fear the worst with respect to any alternative...
Basically they like vodka too much, which was somewhat fortunate from my point of view big grin , and they don't want any extremist nut to take that away from them - the last person to try that one was Gorbachev, and it was probably that which cost him his presidency - and the Soviet Union!

Paul old chap

I agree, one does not kick a man when he is down, but you can kick a pig.

He may be descending the slippery slope but he is not yet totally down and out.

Anyway, there are better things to discuss than Pig.

Excellent posts about the Afghanistan.

Joel told me an interesting story recently, where a photography discussion group got spammed by the Taleban and caused the network to crash cos they found the server was hosted by some Russian.

No, I think *our* departure from JM lab 816s and What Hi*fi? to beer and whisky should be a sure winner of that one! smile

but I did once meet a South African who told me that "the blacks" were all much happier under apartheid because they knew where they stood.

When I lived and worked in South Africa in 1993, I heard this sort of bigoted statement all the time.

It does help though.

"To have been there is not always to be right."

I find myself enraged by commentary on N Ireland by those who haven't been there. However I am also unable to give a rational objective view on recent events in the Ardoyne. Despite this I'm quite happy to be a pub bore on the Middle east, S Africa etc.
Its a tricky one.
