WWOOOOOHHOOOOO K Rudd has won on Environmental trading Scheme

We can look forward to being the only country in the world with this in place. Rudds vanity has won and he can strut around like a cockerel at Copenhagen bragging that a country that produces less than 1% of world polution will cripple itself financially with this punitive tax regime.
Shame is, is that China and India will replace our 1% in a few months with their increases in pollution.
Forecast is for a family that total household bills per annum will increase by approx $1200.00.

Rudd may not have the most likeable persona, but hard not to see where he's coming from here...
Austalia is roughly 10th in the rank of CO2 emissions per head, China roughly 100th or so.
Australia per capita should clearly foot the bill under the 'polluter pays' principle.
Additionally many 'western' countries, including Oz, have economies built on manufacture of Aussie designed goods, for Aussie companies made in China etc...so of course they should also pay for some element of their emissions as well (which they probably won't).
If you want to dance, you have to pay the band.
A$12oo per year per family? Sell the 4ckin V8 mate and actually walk somewhere or buy a sensible car...you'll save at least that.

Given that Oz is becoming (if not already) an economic colony of China by supplying coal and iron ore and then taking back manufactured goods. Perhaps Oz should open up it's immigration policy and allow more people in from Asia - this way the average CO2 produced per head would get spread over a greater population, poor immigrants would not have cars and big TVs for quite a while.

You seem to forget that most of this barren land is uninhabitable. That there is also insufficient water to have a much larger population.
As regards pollution levels would you rather live in Aus or in parts of China.
Pollution per head of population is misleading as Aus has a very low population per square area.
As for Aussies having V 8's etc these latest generation of cars have pretty good fuel efficiency as they have a great power to weight ratio. it is only when you lead foot them that they like a drink.
What Aus needs is better public transport infrastructure but with Toll roads who the hell will do that when cars are such generous cash cows for Govt.
