HDX Gone

Just telling you i sold my HDX. Extremly tired of "the new software" issue. How hard can it be!!
Posted on: 29 November 2009 by rega1
Are you sure it is not a simple fix? Plenty of HDX owners here with no issues. No need to sell the kit? Send it in to the dealer or to naim and explain your case, they will address it I am sure.

That's not what he means rega1...He's referring to the very long delayed software update for the HDX, which hopefully will bring a good few features that arguably should have been there originally....

I look forward to wireless MAC engraved music and radio to a good improved Airport Express with very good power supplies and DAC. Could it be the Naim DAC with 555PS?

So he is just joking? Just a bold statement to be putting out there on a forum for all to see. But, to each his own....

I'm confused - why is it a bold statement ?
Perhaps klotis can speak for himself, but my guess is he's rather pissed off with an expensive piece of kit he has purchased, that still doesn't have the functionality he was maybe looking for, despite waiting many months through promises of software updates...In light of which, he's decided to flog it.... Simple equation really.

it is my opinion, just as it is yours.
like i said, to each his own.... And, there are many happy HDX owners out there.

Know how he feels - I have already bought the NAS in anticipation for remote ripping and other promised goodies.
Also although the touch screen is lovely I cannot read it from my seat so have a screen with unsightly cable across the carpet - still waiting for the ipod app which I use on the Sonus in the rest of the house.
Naim must have the most patient customer group in audio - if you mention the delays on the HiFi forum there is a torrent of defensive statements from devotees who are content to put up with anything if it has the Naim logo on it.
If my business was six months late on promised delivery we would have no customers.

There wasn't a promised date. I'm just surprised these are bought to be used in a manner that isn't currently satisfactory for an anticipated use. If your dealer promised a definite date then he's at fault and not Naim. Naim hasn't said much and dealers and distributors have been the larger source of info. I always say to expect delays on product and upgrades as it's nearly always the case with every manufacturer I deal with. The update will come but If I a absolutely needed to have more from a HDX than it offers now, I'd wait.

Naim make the best amplifiers, IMO
In terms of source components the CDS3 and NAT01 beat anything since.
Naim is a great manufacture of amplifiers and one [or several] superb radio tuners with one truly great CD player [CDS3] to their name. Almost everything else has a feel that it is not quite ready for release or is actually not quite sorted out including the CD 555.

The HDX works perfectly for me. If they never updated it I'd still keep it as my soource component. I don't see how the update will radaically alter the functionality in day to day terms.
As it is it makes great music in my system.

Sorry js - oh yes they have - direct from the horse's mouth not dealer (who are just as frustrated) but from Salisbury.
Nothing wrong with the HDX as a source - but as George says some of the stuff has had the first customer as the last testers.

There's a difference between a projection and a deadline or promise. Rushing this would only help to create the very thing you don't want. Consumers as testers. This isn't open source, takes your chances stuff. The HDX does a lot more than other network players with adding files and will soon(? ) also be a capable server with attached storage. This isn't a fix so much as a higher level of capabilities. There's a lot to sort out and debug that comes along with it. I do agree that some of the early vid stuff was quirky but the 2 ch kit has not been. They're making sure to keep it that way.

Have just searched back for statements on the progress of the update and shocked even myself, things being far earlier than I remembered...!
We were in Beta as far back as January .
Then things slipped to July .
Then we were 'very close' at the start of November .
That's some beta testing - I trust it's going to be perfectly bug free and ooba compatible with anything out there !
I think George is spot on in his analysis. Naim obviously excel with solid state but seem to struggle with anything software related....
Bruce - I agree the HDX makes great music and it was one of your postings that turned me on to the HDX as potentially being my source. However, I have one question regarding your 'unbothered' view of the update - what are you going to do when you have filled the internal HD with your music ??

I am not going to fill it for about another 6/12 at the current rate of progress so I shall see!

I am using "child labour" to have all my CDs ripped (he is also putting them on itunes for his own use) so we are very near filling up the HDX disks - hence my impatience.

I'm confused, has the HDX stopped working because not having these updates?
Have several facilities been removed because you have not got this update?
If no to these questions , then surely the HDX is doing exactly what it was when you bought it.
If you chose to buy on the promise of "new" features to come, well more fool you, if you sell probably at a loss then even more so.

Happy to say I bought from one of the dissillusioned. So it is a fantastic product and gives better quality than the sonus plus cambridge DAC.
BUT if a company is going to actively trail new features as Naim have unquestionably done - then there comes a time to deliver or say it will not be ready until x date definitive.

Exactly...And exactly why I personally haven't bought one yet! A frustrating product IMHO - so close, yet so far away...

Jeremy, comparing Sonus/DacMagic (< 1 K$) with HDX (8.5 K$) is not fair. Would you compare Sonus/Lavry (1.5 K$) with HDX (even HDX/XPS), get a first shock at sound difference, second shock at price difference -- then it will be a fair deathmatch
For those who tired from endless software upgrades I can advice to go for CD5XS/DAC (cheaper than HDX).

I am in the happy position of having a HDX with 555PS and a CD555 in my study/listening room.
The HDX is nowhere near sonically but has the great advantage of having all my CDs at the touch of a remote or my netbook.
I use the Sonus in the rest of the house for the same reasons - convenience mainly.
I am hoping the HDX with DAC will still be behind the 555 but my dealer who has demoed this combo says it is very close - but he probably wants to sell me that other 555PS for the 555!
Do not misunderstand me I think the HDX is a great product but the promise of what it could be is where the frustration lies.
