I need to justify something.

Posted by: stevie d on 16 September 2003

Hi All

I have the following set up CD5/112/150 and B&W 602S'3 and I want to add a Hicap before upgrading my speakers in the new year.

Problem: I need to justify paying for the Hicap. How can I explain what it does to the 'boss' indoors.

Many thanks
Stevie

Dozy

Easier said than done. She is only just about coming round to the 112/150 I bought on the 5th. I may be pushing my luck to go for the Hicap aswell!!

Cheers

For maximum benefit I would plug the Hicap into my CD5.... Is this correct??

Yeah...you need two. One for the CD5 & one for the amp Big Grin Big Grin

One thing at a time. Confused

To justify one Hicap will be a challenge, but two. That is one miracle I don't think I can pull off or afford at the moment. Maybe after the new speakers in Jan. Big Grin

Hi
How about a Flatcap 2 to power both amp and CD and when funds allow, 1 Hicap for the CD then sell the FC2 and buy another Hicap for the Pre-amp or vice-versa if you prefer the sound that way.

Jim

I have the funds for a good s/h hicap. It will cost me around 500 of the queens finest right?? I should also get a tasty bonus in Jan which will allow me to upgrade my speakers and possibly purchase another s/h hicap.

Thats my theory on how I can do things, but, if there is a better option out there, please do let me know

Cheers

Here's the dem that you need to do with swmbo:

1) listen without the psu for a few minutes
2) listen with the psu for a few minutes (this alone may blow you both away)
3) listen without the psu - you'll probably feel life is not quite as worth living as you thought. That's the psu effect, and you get your joie de vivre back when you get the psu.

Your new setup may be so new that you're still immune to the psu effect. If that's the case, don't buy one yet.

You will find that your speakers will be less in need of replacement after you get a psu, or 2 in your case.

Regards.

Steve, consider used. If it doesn't work you can always resell it for the same price.

Stevie - You should be able to find a HiCap or two for £300-£350 each. Phil is right about the speakers too, you may not need them.
There is one here for £325

How comes some of them are so cheap? I would want one with a black front (new style?) Would it still be the same price?

Stevie D,

Don't underestimate the importance to SWMBO of the aesthetics of whatever gear you audition. It may be very important that it matches. If this is the case, a second hand olive hicap may not be an option.

But, IMHO, a flatcap 2 might be an excellent choice. It would power both preamp and cd5.

Buy the Hi cap behind her back, and then hide it in a shoe box next to your system. Smile

You need to bluff it. "Oh and by the way, the dealer has said that the other two boxes are ready for collection now". "Yeah, you know, the power supply boxes" Wink

I explain it like this... It's like the no streak window cleaner compared to the cheap streaky stuff. The music will be cleaner and more and easier to listen too.

I had a Hi-Cap with my CD3.5. Definitely worth a home demo.
(In my case, it lived behind a sofa for a while, and then sprouted a friend for the preamp...)

Hi Stevie.

This maybe a hill to high. Sell the 112 and buy a 202, this will sound better than caping CD or amp Roll Eyes.

Stevie,

I find that the prospect of a new piece of gear is exciting on several levels, one of which is the challenge of getting the thing into the house with my nutsack intact. Now more than ever is a time for cunning and ingenuity. Remember, there is ALWAYS a way.

For example :

Tonight when you get home ask where the asprin is. You have a really strange headache. By the end of next week you should be necking asprin by the bucketload (don't actually take any BTW). Eventually your wife will suggest that you visit a doctor (e.g. "why don't you stop farking complaining and go a see a farking doctor, dickhead"). Reluctantly agree. The next night return home visibly shaken. Doc says that you need to have tests but that he is almost certain that you have a particularly nasty type of brain tumor that kills most patients within a year of diagnosis. Tests are to be performed in a weeks time. The initial gnashing and wailing should peter out after a few days. Now wait for a quiet reflective moment. Put James Taylor's "secret o' life" on the system and deliver the killer blow : "I know it sounds silly darling but I really regret dying without a Hi-Cap powering at least one of the devices in my system. Oh Well (sigh)".

Naturally after the Hi-Cap(s) have been purchased the headaches will subside and the tests will put you back in the pink.

I have more of these if you need them Wink

Minky

Have you tried this before. If I deveoloped a brain tumour (supposed, anyway) the first thing she would do is dig out the pension/life insurance documents and see if she will be 'looked after'.

I'm sure that this could really be a good time to bring in a Hicap as her mind would be planning those potential shopping trips!

Stevie D, you know me.
remember where you got the 112/150 ?
Don't worry about the hicap yet. If you want an upgrade save your pennies for a CDX2 and/or change your speakers to something like CM2's or the forthcoming 705.
You could of course put a flatcap2 in the system, but these funds could be put toward the front end which will make a much bigger difference.
Besides, I thought your good woman was coming round to the HiFi idea?
I would have thought you would want to enjoy what you have for a while but it seems you have the upgrade bug big time!!
I'm sure i will speak to you soon!

Hmmm, upgrades.
Posted on: 17 September 2003 by stevie d
Oh Yoda. I was warned your name may crop up at some point!!

The speakers were on my agenda for the future (maybe not so distant) The CDM1NT's we're also recommended to me. Although a maybe PX could be the ticket as I have had enough of selling on ebay now. Gets a tad tricky carrying boxes to work before sending on!

Maybe you could keep your eyes peeled for the CDX2 - after Christmas (maybe Big Grin)

The good lady is coming round to the idea of Hifi. She just thinks of the £ signs over how it sounds. (She is not fully trained Roll Eyes)

Cheers
Stevie

P.S. I had such fun getting those boxes home that Friday. My arms must have grown by about an inch!!
Posted on: 17 September 2003 by Jedi
Oh dear, it was slightly ambitious doing the public transport thing with those box's I suppose.

Just so you know the CDM1NT is dead, long live the replacement 705.

Havn't heard them yet but have it on good authority that they are an improvement over the CDM1. Will let you Know.

I'm sure our mutual dealer would be happy to help with a px.

Paul tells me you were quite pleased with the results of your recent purchases, I suppose I shouldn't gloat too much.

Have fun!!

Hmmm, upgrades.

You could say I was happy. It does make me wonder why I bought the Arcam/ Rotel gear. It all sounds soooo much different. Even uneducated folk have complimented it.

I knew I would have to change the speakers almost as soon as I got home that night. I like the look of the 705's (Just checked B&W website). I am sure that I will arrange a demo of them (and other bookshelf in same price bracket)

Ta
Stevie
