I can understand the need for "cut through", but I'm not sure if this is the best way to have done it.

I don't have an issue with it. What makes you not so keen?

I don't have an issue with it either, but parts of the target audience might. Stereotypes about Australia and Australians originating in the 1970s (welfare state, lazy, dole bludgers, coarse, uncultured, etc) no longer have foundation, but they prevail in many parts of the world, and this advertising campaign may reinforce them.

I have come across such biases on numerous occasions throughout the Asia Pacific region. The worst example happened a few years ago, when I worked for one of the large US companies, and I started reporting to a newly appointed head of Asia Pacific, who was based in Hong Kong. Within the first five minutes of my very first telephone conversation with him, he managed to say the words "Australians are lazy". It was totally out of context and irrelevant to our discussion, but for some reason he had an overwhelming urge to say the words. When they see the advertising campaign, instead of thinking "Australians are friendly", people like him will be thinking "Australians are crude".

Bloody good adverstisement.
It does portray Aussies well, open, welcoming and most importantly, straight up.. You get what you see... most of those I know are just that .. And Aussies are not crude, just honest people of the earth.
(my experience so far anyway)

I liked the ad.

Steve - interesting.

As a Brit who has now lived in Oz for just about 2 years, I saw the ad as more like what Jagdeep described.

Have to say when I saw the ad it made me proud to be able to live in this outstanding country.

I'm sure you realise more than most it's only through travel that you come to appreciate how good home is. That's how I feel about Australia, and not only in a personal sense, but also from a business perspective. We're not perfect, but our regulatory and governance frameworks are effective and sensible, in contrast with Sarbanes-Oxley, for example.

But I'm certain those old attitudes towards Australia still exist in many countries, and surprisingly they are not confined to the older generations. However, they are less prevalent than before, and will eventually fade.

Well, It has convinced me; We'll be there end of March for three weeks. Yihaa!!

BTW there are stereo types for about every country, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Peter, you'll have a great time, 600,000 Brits per year can't be wrong. Smile

An outstanding commercial, brilliantly conceived and produced, making supremely effective use of "available resources", and released with impeccable timing. I fail to see how anyone could be offended by that.

But remember, it's a commercial.

Will appeal to younger travellers but will it make any real difference to the older and more discerning market?
Illustration:
Met an American from Kentucky on holidays in Cairns recently. He told me he was here for a couple of weeks and would be in the area for the complete time.
When I asked him why only this area, he said he had no idea the country was so vast. This is pretty typical of overseas perception of Australia with the older generations.
Glad you like the ad though and a pity you will have to visit the cinema to see it.
However that young lady in widescreen, wow!

Friends

What is it now, 19-20 mil people living on a continent roughly the size of the U.S which itself has a population of 300 mil.? Lovely people, good government, the great outdoors, no crowds.

Why would you want to tell anyone? Are you crazy?

Regards
Clay

All this controversy over the ad: precisely the intended effect?

Just got back from Tazzie.
Ah. Lovely...even if it was for work.
It's such a beautiful place.

Melbourne too is lovely.
If only I could secure a job to keep us (my family) going comfortably, I would move there but not much call for paper making technicians on Taz. There are a few mills there but they have all the people they need.
