Loudspeaker for Naim!?

Posted by: naimaseven on 31 December 2002

an old question, but interesting, too -
I´m searching for a new speaker for the following system:

Naim CD 2, NAC 102 / Hi/ Napsc / NAP 180 / Naca 5
Audiophile Base / Systemdek IIX900 lp drive
and Dynaudio Facette

(second system is:
Naim CD 3, Nait 3R, Flatcap 2, IXO, NAP 150 (2)
and Naim Credo)

Now, I want to change the Dynaudio Facette speaker, because they need to much power - they have an excellent harmony , but I miss this kind of "musicality" (like the Credo does)
_____________

in the last month I listened to Mission 781,782, Shahinian Compass, Epos ES 22, Dynaudio Special 25, naim allae - but
what do you think about the following:

1.) naim: o.K. - but I have a Credo already
2.) linn: I don´t know, if it´s a good thing to "mix" linn and naim
3.) Shahinian: good for classic, but muffled with pop
4.) Dynaudio: good harmonics, but need to much power
5.) Royd: no dealer in Germany - listened to in 1993, that was excellent
6.) Neat: can´t buy in Germany
7.) Mission: ???
8.) Castle: what about them?
9.) QUAD: QUAD is QUAD, Naim is Naim, and together, never heard them?
10.) B+W: don´t like their stereo / hifi sound
11.) EPOS: good, clean, but not good in timing and treble
12.) others: wilson benesch, kef, celestion ???

can you help me???

I would endorse the epos approach. I have cd2, 82, 2 x hi and a 250 running es22s. Previously I had a 72 hi and 180 with es11s. If you like the epos sound go for this - preferably with a 250 though

Have you tried the Ruark range.

I use a pair of Equinox's and they work very well with Naim gear!!

or Apogee Slant Sixes.

Extremely natural sound. Midrange and treble rival that of Quad's. Dynamic woofer adds punch so funk, hip-hop and heavy orchestral works have appropriate weight. When new were considered "Apogee's for the Masses".

When evaluating make sure the ribbon tweeters are smooth and straight. Listen to make sure woofers are solid (all woofers can eventually wear out or suffer from clipping if overdriven with an underpowered amplifier or overdriven beyond their limits by a powerful amplifier).
