Two technical questions to the “252 – knowledgeable”

Posted by: uem on 30 October 2003

Hello everyone,

“Acoustical Nirvana is coming nearer everyday….as my new 252 is filling my rooms with heavenly musical pleasures….” – it sounds great, even cold out of the box (actually, the SuperCap was in use for quite a while, but not the head unit, which replaces an 82)

Two technical questions to the “252 – knowledgeable”
Back-ground: I’m using one of these very old remote controls, which has two banks of selectors – one for Preamp and one for Record-, each marked with the appropriate source name, and not just a number. HOWEVER: the socket-sequence is changed on the 252 from the older series, as the input 1 on the remote selects Phono, 2 = CD, etc.
I want these selectors on the remote to be correct, and not necessarily the ones on the 252 front panel – meaning: I’ll have to connect my CDS 2 to input 2, and phono to input 1 via the cinch sockets.
1) On the 252: Are the DIN inputs 1 (CD) and 2 (Tuner) absolutely identical ? (on the older models, there were numerous threads debating the merits of the inputs)
2) Once the cinch configuration has been completed, will it remain so “ for ever”, even after a lengthy power-down period - or do you have to repaet it again after longer "shut-downs" ? (BTW: for this configuration-action I must use the new Narcom 3 RC – the old one can’t do these steps - Also: I do disconnect my whole system for lengthy absences, due to the risk of lighting)

Thanks for your advise

Regards

Urs,

are you using the long, thin stick-like remote with buttons puking up through a glass top?

If so, the labels on the buttons can be replaced! See if Naim have a sheet of button labels lying around.

cheers, Martin

Martin,

No it's the one shown in this thread below - as per the photos by OMER.
The markings are directly on the cover and can't be changed.
Sorry, I'm unable to insert the picture directly

I had exactly the same problem when I changed from 82 to a 252.
I wanted to keep the same remote as like you, I much preferred that "old" style one.
As you say, the buttons do not correspond, so in the end, I decided to bite the bullet and use the "new" style remote that came with the 252 and CDX2.
I have to admit that after a couple of weeks, I had got used to the "new" one to a large extent.
I do still however find it annoying when I hit button 2 for example and instead of getting track 2 of a CD suddenly find myself listening to the radio!
I'll get over it :-)

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Use a real remote, a programmable/learning one.

Calling NAIM Technical Support
for a reply to the two queries (as per my original thead):
----------------------------------
1) On the 252: Are the DIN inputs 1 (CD) and 2 (Tuner) absolutely identical ? (on the older models, there were numerous threads debating the merits of the inputs)

2) Once the cinch configuration has been completed, will it remain so “ for ever”, even after a lengthy power-down period - or do you have to repaet it again after longer "shut-downs" ?

Thank you for your kind reply

Richard,

Urs asked a question in the public area. I'm interested in your answer and I guess it would be interesting for others too to know the answer.

Would you be so kind and post the answer here?

Thanks in advance

From Richard

Hi Urs,

firstly, the NAC252 should have come with the latest Narcom remote control. If yours did not then contact your dealer as soon as possible.

Otherwise, if you prefer your original Narcom then it is usable but, as you have discovered, the inputs will be a little different.

DIN inputs 1 and 2 are identical.

Once the RCA inputs have been selected, the preamp will hold that configuration indefinitely or until either a change is made in Program Mode or Factory defaults are restored.

Best wishes,
Richard

Dear Richard,

Thanks for your reply - I failed to note your answer in my inbox...!

All is clear now !
Of course I got the new RC 3 - I just don't like it and now I will keep my old one.
BTW: the new & great feature of 2-speed volume control & "stepping" does work perfectly with the old RC as well.

Best Regards

This is one aspect that *really* annoys me, and several friends, with the new kit.

The default motor speed should be the slow one, and a faster motion available with a double-click.

cheers, Martin

Absolutely. 99% of the time I'm making small volume adjustments not large swings around the dial.
